Cozumel is an island that offers incredible options for diving and snorkeling when visiting Riviera Maya. You can cover different places in just one day and try the snorkeling/diving activities by the bay. From the moment you step into the island there are several options offered at the ferry station, so this is helpful piece of information to help you choose the best ones. The diversity of companies can be overwhelming sometimes, this is why we have highlighted the top activities you can try in Cozumel and the companies that can offer them.
First things first, if you are currently vacationing anywhere in Cancun or the Riviera Maya there are two different options to get to the island; The first one is by taking a Ferry. The only two companies that cross are Ultramar and Mexico Waterjets. Whatever ferry you choose the rate would be the same, around $300.00 pesos per person and per round trip. Departures are every hour and we recommend you to purchase your ticket one way and get the return ticket at the island, once you are ready to come back. The ferry station in Playa del Carmen is located at the beginning of 5th Avenue, right on the beach.
The other option that is perfect for travelers who already have a vehicle, is to cross to the island through Calica port in Punta Venado. You can check the rates and schedule with Transcaribe company. Rates go from $800.00pesos per vehicle (all the people you can fit it) and they have flexible times that go from 6:00am to 6:00pm.
One of the main activities you can practice at the island is snorkeling, the reefs are perfect for diving and snorkeling. There are many reefs but we recommend the top ones; El Cielo, Chankanaab and Dzul Ha. You will enjoy of crystal clear waters, many fish, crabs and even dolphins. Once you arrive to the island you can rent a guide and request a tailored snorkeling or diving trip. If you ask us, diving is even better than snorkeling but for beginners we suggest the first activity.
Manta Raya Diving and Blue Caribe Diving have plenty of experience with travelers and knowledge of the area and the reefs at the island. Their trips are friendly to all budgets and needs. They can also arrange diving tours for large groups or families. Check the recent podcast we did with Kelley Morgan about Manta Raya Diving in Cozumel and get the craziest tips to enjoy your vacation.
If one of your favorite activities include golfing, Cozumel island also has that option available. The Cozumel Country Club features 18 holes in one of the best golf courses and the equipment is available for rent. The club house also offers special tours for bird watchers, discounts for “Stay and Play” packages and golf cart rentals. The Cozumel Country Club is located on the main avenue, around 15 minutes from the ferry station, on Cozumel south.
As an extra tip we highly recommend the panoramic trips and airplane tours that Aerosaab offers to Cozumel. This is a faster way to explore the island without even touching the ground.
