I will admit. I have avoided this dish for decades, I mean for decades! But a few weeks ago, with five other girlfriends, we decided to pull up our big girl panties and just do it. I have been known to try just about anything. There are few activities that I will shy away from.. I am a cave explorer for goodness sake, but Oaxacan grasshoppers have just been my fear. Fear no longer, I am a convert!
I know you are saying, ‘crazy, you will never catch me dead eating roasted grasshoppers’ I have also said this for a very, very long time. But I bit the bullet, so to speak, and man I have missed out all these years! High in protein, low in fat, roasted in lime and chili. Chapulines are served with tortillas, guacamole and salsa. Our first bit was with the guac and tortilla. After that we ate those critters straight up!
So where on earth did we have these little pieces of protein heaven? My original taste was in Puerto Morelos in a great Mexican Restaurant called Sabores de Mexico. Chapulines is the Spanish word for this regional dish. I have since had them at La Perla Pixan Restaurant in Playa del Carmen. I saunter up to their bar, take a seat and just have Chapulines and a tequila.
All I have to say is, the legend is right. Once you have Chapulines you will never turn back! And I ain’t turning back!
