History Of The Equinox

Chichen Itza Equinox

Chichen Itza Equinox happens twice a year. There is the autumn Equinox (September) and the Spring Equinox (March), and neither is less impressive than the other. This 2016 it will be the 15th edition of Spring Equinox at Chichen Itza and the Archeological famous site is expecting to host over 30,000 people to celebrate together the appearance of Kukulkán God in the form of a snake shadow descending the main pyramid. There are few spectacles where all the family can enjoy of the activities and get a real taste of what Mayan culture stands for.

History says that Mayans created the Kukulkán temple also known as El Castillo pyramid at Chichen Itza, along with two different calendars that combined will show the proper seasons to start sowing their lands and begin the agriculture season. Mayan civilizations were incredibly smart and used Math, Astronomy, Geometry and even acoustic. Visitors observe that if you locate yourself in front of the main pyramid and clap twice, it will echo making a sound similar to the singing of Quetzal bird. The Kukulkán God was then expected to descend from heaven and receive offerings to help Mayans with a prosper harvest, during the Equinox that was actually named by the Mayans as the Chickabán party.

Activities During The Event

The main spectacle occurs at exactly 3 hours before the sunset starts, that´s when the sunlight location creates a shadow in the form of a snake that descends over the stairs of the main pyramid as the time passes. This solar projection happens in about 10 minutes and starts fading away. Once the snake shadow has descent completely, the last ray of sun projects the head of the snake (Kukulkán God).

During the event there are a couple of spiritual activities like meditation and prayers. Wearing white is highly recommended as the whole purpose of the event is to charge your body with positive energy and improve your spiritual being. The event is also accompanied by meditations and spiritual ceremonies. There are certain groups from all over the world that arrive to Mexico only to attend this incredible event.
