Riviera Maya Photo of the Day – Xelha ruin – Ancient Mayan art

This mural was discovered at the Xelha ruins near Akumal, a small but very interesting ruin site that should not be missed by those with a passion for Maya history. The painting, done sometime between 300 and 600 AD,  seems to be of birds flying over buildings that look like cages. An ancient artist’s statement about freedom perhaps?
