Well the world did not end in 2012 so we decided to check out a new tour that takes you into the depths of the jungle and a local Mayan community. This new tour is a community tour offered by Ojos Mayas, Mayan Eyes, that delivers tours of working Mayan communities to open a community conversation about the Mayan way of life. This is not your regular tour, this is an in depth view of how contemporary Mayan communities live in the Yucatan. The elder in this photo has stories of the last Caste War fought between the local Mayan community and the Spanish. Was it intriguing, absolutely. This was the first time that we have been able to communicate to a Mayan elder directly with the help of a translator. Put the history books down, this tour gives you a first hand history lesson from those who lived it!

This was a great day for us, and we recommend others to experience this sustainable tour that directly benefits the Mayan communities. If you want to learn more about the Yucatan, check out Merida and what it has to offer as well!
