Ready for Fat Tuesday and all the events that lead up to the celebration of this holiday? We are and it looks we will be parading for a few weeks! Luckily there are carnaval parades and festivals throughout the Riviera Maya. Events start February 16,2017 in Puerto Morelos and ending March 5, 2017 in Tulum. Yes these parties extend a little past Ash Wednesday which falls on March 1 this year, but heck, what’s a few extra days!
If you are thinking that I spelt Carnival incorrectly, I just want you to know that I spelt it in Spanish – Carnaval. If you continue to search online for more information, most event announcements are in Spanish. Your search will be more successful using ‘carnaval’ instead of ‘carnival.’
Puerto Morelos is launching their carnaval activities first, starting February 16 to 21 with the best activities held February 18 and 19th. This is a local event so swing over to the other side of the highway to get involved in the parades, parties, and contests. The Zocalo in the Colonia is located to the west of highway 307 just two blocks in. The zocalo is walking distance from collectivos coming from Cancun and Playa del Carmen. There will be some other activities on the square February 18 in front of the beach, but the real party is in the Colonia.
This carnaval is the most famous and well produced event in the Riviera Maya. It is worth taking the ferry over to Cozumel to see the performances, costumes and just liveliness of the city during this week. Cozumel Festival is from February 22 to March 1 but they have an entire line up of parties throughout the month of February.
Their Facebook page has a ton of information and videos. We might just see you there!
Playa had decided to hold their Carnaval parades and parties from February 22 to February 28, 2017. Events take place in the town square across from the Municipal offices on 20th Avenue between 8th and 10th Streets. There will also be a parade on 10th Ave running from Avenida Juarez to Constityentes. More events will be held in Parques Fundadores on 5th Ave at the ferry pier to Cozumel.
This video was taken at the press conference at the end of January and shows off some of the talent that will be shakin’ and movin’ during this 7 day party!
Isla Mujeres is ramping it up for Carnaval 2017. Their festivals will run starting February 24 and end February 28, 2017. This is a main square event just a few blocks from the ferry pier on the island, but I am sure there will be parties all over the island in the evenings.
Tulum is hosting their Carnaval parties and parades March 3 to 5, 2017. These parties happen in the pueblo, and are super fun. This is where you might want to end your Carnaval celebrations of 2017.
If you find yourself in the Yucatan, Merida is the place to be for Carnaval. Merida is known for their Carnaval parades and parties throughout Mexico, so it is well worth the effort to see what they have up their sleeve. Traditionally, the main event which is their parade, is held on Pasejo de Montejo and ends in the main Zocalo, but this year the entire 7 day list of events is being held in the Xmatkuil Fair Grounds outside of the city center. Merida is known for offering free transportation to the Fair Grounds and this event should not be an exception.
