Merida is one of the best places to visit in the Yucatan peninsula. Their amazing architecture and history make it impossible to avoid the city. Everything is more affordable and family friendly too. There is something about this place that makes you feel like home. Super safe, friendly people, lots of places to visit with your family and free activities. You would be surprised to see how many cultural and artistic events are organized every day. It takes only one visit to this beautiful city to fall in love with it.
The city is well known by its many Theaters at the historical center. There are more than 15 different Theaters in the entire city. But if you visit the Historical center you can get the chance to visit the main ones and enjoy of FREE plays. José Peón Contreras Theater is the oldest in the city and also the biggest and most elegant. Located downtown. Inside you will find the schedule for the week and some of the plays are for free. There is also Daniel Ayala Theater which is a lot smaller but also less crowded. Most of the plays are free and the schedule is posted inside the theater every 2 weeks. The Theater Armando Manzanero is the most famous one. Its name was given in honor of one of the most incredible song writers in Mexico and also very famous singer. They rarely offer free plays as only the important ones are performed there but they are worth of every buck.
For families with kids this place is like a true heaven. Half of the park was designated to be the home of over 30 different species including giraffes, monkeys, hippos, snakes, flamingos, deer, tigers and birds. The other side of the park has kid’s games, little train, cableway, aquarium, palapas, food stands and benches. The access to the Centenario park is completely FREE and is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 6:00am to 6:00pm. Although the area to see the animals is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm only. We highly recommend you to bring enough cash since no credit or debit cards are accepted at the food stands.
