Keeping Cool with Aguas Frescas

Aguas Frescas Riviera Maya

Convenience stores, coffee shops and juice bars are a Canadian’s and American’s go-to-place for something to drink. Here in the Riviera Maya the best and cheapest place to get a nice cold drink is the local Agua Fresca store. Direct translation of Agua Fresca is ‘Fresh Water’ or ‘Cold Water’ but what these fresh waters really are will blow your mind taste buds.

Aguas Frescas are made by combining fresh fruits, grains, seeds, and even flowers, with sugar and water. They are made fresh every day and kept in a large glass or stainless steel container with ice. The variety of fruit and grain milk drinks can be overwhelming but once you pick one, any one, you will be cooled off in a flash. Perfect for our Riviera Maya climate.

These are different from juices. A juice is purely the juice from fruit. These are fruit juices mixed with water making them a healthier choice.

Typical Fruit Aguas Frescas are pineapple, mandarin, orange, watermelon, lime, mango, tamarindo, guabanana. There is a local specialty called Tepiche which is fermented pineapple and chile, a personal favorite.

There is one very special Agua Fresca made from hibiscus flowers called Jamiaca. This Agua Fresca uses a dried hibiscus flower, water and sugar to make this delicious cool drink.

Our all-time favorite is Horchata. This rice milk drink uses whole grain rice, soaked and then blended, to make real rice milk. Sugar, cinnamon and vanilla are added to the mix to make this a wonderful treat. Though your taste buds think ‘milkshake’ when you first drink this, your waistline says thank you, as it does not have the dairy and ice cream found in a typical milkshake.

Where to Find Aguas Frescas

Typically these drinks are found at local neighborhood restaurants and Agua Fresca stores. You will not find these in your regular tourist areas nor in a convenience store. Take a step to the right, or a step to the left off the main tourist area in your Riviera Maya city to find these great, refreshing drinks that are pennies, or should we say pesos, per serving.
