Bruce Brown – Director, producer and Writer of The Endless Summer 1966
In 1990 I would have said, “You can’t tell how good a CAVE is until you try it”. As an avid cave diver and soon to be explorer, I headed to the Riviera Maya on an epic Endless Summer journey, similar to the iconic movie released by Bruce Brown. My epic endless summer led to a 180 degree turn in my life, which is now Loco Gringo.
The 1966 film was based on this very clear and easy idea – with enough time and money it would be possible to follow the summer up and down the world, making it endless. Two guys did just this, as surfers, and redefined the surfing industry, as Bruce Brown caught it all on film.
Very few of us have the time or the money to create a true Endless Summer, but we can create an endless week of summer, far from the snow and hail of the north, by taking a short plane ride. All you need is some enthusiasm, a love for the sun, the beach and dinners outside. May your endless summer journey begin.
I am beyond the point of living the surfer’s, or even the cave diver’s lifestyle where you move from tent to hostel to someone’s couch. What I do know is that I don’t need a bucket full of money to escape the winter and live well. With a little research, the lay of the local land, and some pesos on your pocket, the endless summer week is achievable on a budget and just around the corner.
If you are keeping up with the current peso to US dollar (Canadian dollar) exchange rate, your endless summer just got a bit sweeter. Bruce Brown also said that the best does not have to be expensive for it to be the best. And that we know for a fact! Tacos for a buck, fresh mangos for 50 cents, some of the best roast chickens for 4 USD and that includes potatoes, rice and refried beans!
Sure you can save and save and wind up at an all inclusive resort that caters to your every whim. Or you can rent a condo, have some privacy, and explore local neighborhoods in the Riviera Maya. Your endless summer week can start now and include hundreds of adventures in the jungle or the sea at a reasonable cost.
I would never have predicted over 20 years ago that I would end up living the endless summer life with sun every day, a beach just steps away, and dinners al fresco each evening. I wouldn’t change it for the world. For many an endless summer is the epic movie where travelers tour the world in search of the endless summer. For others it is living a lifestyle that includes so many dreamy summer ‘things’ all year round or even for just a week.
BBQ’s • sundresses • shorts and tshirts • cold watermelon • napping in a hammock • the smell of sunscreen • swimming every day – outdoors • sand castles • outdoor yoga • long walks • fresh pedicure and sandals • eating outside • sunny days = better moods • roof top dinners • skinny dipping • the sun on your face • ice cream • boating, kayaking • fresh seasonal fruit
Add a little adventure (or not), some good books, meeting new people and experiencing a new lifestyle, the summer lifestyle, and you are rocking it. It does not have to be for months, a week or two should do it!
Curious how much it would cost you to fly to the Cancun airport in the Riviera Maya where you could stay in Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, or Puerto Aventuras. Check out the latest flight prices and just see if the endless summer dream is for you. That is exactly how Bruce Brown discovered his endless summer. And he never looked back.
