Costa Maya Photo of the Day – Laguna Bacalar

Bacalar, Lake of the 7 Colors

Cannons at Lake Bacalar

Laguna Bacalar in Costa Maya, Mexico was also referred to by the ancient Maya as “the lake of  seven colors” because of all the amazing shades of blue that can be seen on a sunny day. Lake Bacalar is the second largest fresh water lake in Mexico. On its grassy banks sits The Fortress de San Felipe Bacalar that was built by the Spanish in 1729 to protect the town from pirates.
