Why Thanksgiving week works on the Riviera Maya

Cancun ranks first among international destinations in Allianz Partners' 2026 Thanksgiving report. The ranking draws on just over 145,000 insured trips leaving US airports between November 21 and 26. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 this year, so the busiest travel days are almost here.

The good news is that most of those travelers stop in Cancun's hotel zone. Akumal is about 90 minutes south of Cancun airport, and Tulum sits a short drive beyond it. You get the same Caribbean, with far fewer people on the sand.

The weather in late November

November averages a high of 86°F and a low of 68°F in Akumal. The sea averages about 82°F, with roughly six hours of sunshine a day and eight rainy days in the month.

Hurricane season officially ends November 30. The 2026 Atlantic season had produced 10 named storms and only one hurricane as of November 2. That hurricane, Isaias, came ashore in Florida, not in Mexico.

Beach conditions right now

Sargassum fades fast in the fall. In the November 2 statewide monitoring, 85 of 140 beach zones in Quintana Roo had favorable conditions. The heaviest seaweed was in the far south, around Xcalak and Río Huache, well away from Akumal and Tulum.

For a beach-by-beach view of where to swim and snorkel, see our Akumal beach conditions and sargassum guide. You can also check the Akumal Beach Webcam the morning you fly.

More travelers are stretching the holiday into a full week

In the same Allianz survey, 32.4% of travelers were adding vacation days or thinking about it. One in five had already decided to extend, and their median stay was eight days, compared with six for holiday-only trips.

A week changes the math on where you stay. A vacation rental gives you a kitchen, space to spread out, and a dining table big enough for everyone on Thursday.

Getting there: Cancun or Tulum airport?

Cancun (CUN) has the most nonstop flights from the US by far. Plan on about 90 minutes by car to Akumal. Our car rental and transportation page covers your options for the drive.

Tulum (TQO) is closer to Akumal and Tulum, but US service there has been cut sharply. Cirium data cited by The Points Guy puts it down more than 50% from two years ago. American flies from Dallas and Miami, Delta flies from Atlanta, and United leaves the airport in January. Check your airline's schedule before you build a trip around Tulum.

Before you land, read our Cancun airport entry update for 2026 so you know what to expect at arrival.

Where to stay: pick your kind of quiet

  • Akumal: Sea turtles feed on the seagrass in Akumal Bay, a short swim from shore. It's walkable, relaxed and easy with kids.
  • Soliman Bay and Tankah Bay: These are calm, reef-protected bays between Akumal and Tulum, with homes right on the water.
  • Tulum: Pick Tulum for the ruins, the restaurants and more going on at night.
  • Puerto Aventuras: This marina town is easy for fishing charters and boat days.

Thanksgiving dinner, without the work

Mexico doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving, so plan the meal ahead instead of hoping to find one.

Book a private chef now

Private chefs are the most requested service our concierge team arranges. Holiday dates fill early and need a deposit, so book chef services as soon as your dates are set. Ask for a traditional menu, or try a Yucatecan twist like relleno negro, a local turkey dish in a smoky black chile sauce.

Have the kitchen stocked before you arrive

If you'd rather cook, grocery delivery from local partners can have the house stocked when you walk in. Order a whole turkey well ahead, because the selection is smaller than at home.

Or go out

Some local restaurants host Thanksgiving dinners for visiting Americans. Our concierge can tell you which are taking reservations this year.

A Thanksgiving week that isn't all turkey

  1. Saturday: Arrive, unpack and catch the sunset.
  2. Sunday: Snorkel with turtles in Akumal Bay with a certified local guide. See diving and snorkeling.
  3. Monday: Swim in a cenote. See cenotes and caverns.
  4. Tuesday: Visit the Tulum ruins early, before the heat and the tour buses. In 2026, foreign visitors pay about 265 pesos in total entry fees.
  5. Wednesday: Take a boat through the lagoons of Sian Ka'an.
  6. Thursday: Spend the morning at the beach, then have the chef take over the kitchen.
  7. Friday: Skip Black Friday and go deep-sea fishing instead.
