Op-Ed from Locogringo contributor and guest on embracing self-care by taking a solo wellness retreat to Riviera Maya.

A week full of rejuvenation, relaxation, and self-discovery.

Traveling solo has always been a journey of self-discovery, but it can also be a way to focus on self-care and wellness. As a frequent guest and contributor to Locogringo, I recently embarked on a week-long wellness getaway to the Riviera Maya, a region known for its turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and rejuvenating experiences. I booked a week at Yool Caanal 5, a two-bedroom penthouse with a gorgeous view of Half Moon Bay from every room. The condo was affordable and ideally suited my needs as I planned to have a little "touch-up" and would need to stay out of the sun.

Locogringo helped me with all the arrangements, including car rental with Fire Renta A Car Cancun, who met me at the airport exit, eliminating the need to wait in line at a satellite lot. I stopped at Puerto Morelos for a rooftop bite and a drink (I was driving, after all) at Osteria Barocca before heading straight to Akumal to check in at Yool Caanal, just in time for a stunning sunset.

My week blended adventure and relaxation, starting with a dive at Akumal Bay, breakfast at LolHa, a massage at Budha Garden Spa, and shopping at Plaza Ukana. I spent an afternoon at Yool Caanal and had dinner at La Lunita. The next day, I visited Mia Beach Club, which includes lounge chairs, parking, and a gorgeous beachfront setting in Tulum when you eat or drink here. Then, I visited Lolita Lolita Tulum to stock up on the world's best body lotion and body wash (at least in my POV). Before returning to Akumal, I stopped at Mystika Tulum for an immersive spiritual experience.

Day four included yoga with Yogi Russ in Playa Del Carmen, a bite at Casa Sophia, and a visit to Clinica Xtabay for a few rejuvenation treatments. I ended the day with dinner at Turtle Bay Cafe and dessert at Lucy's homemade ice cream before heading back to my condo for an evening of stargazing.

On day five, I worked from home and lounged at Yool Caanal's terrace, followed by happy hour at La Buena Vida.

Day six included:

  • An at-home yoga session with Santa Sofia overlooking Half Moon Bay.
  • A trip to Playa Del Carmen for laser treatment at Depilzone.
  • A late lunch at La Taverna.

I watched my last sunset at the beach for this visit from Yool Caanal, and the next day, I drove straight to the airport, where Fast Car Cancun awaited.

I felt safe and comfortable throughout my trip and knew I was getting the best bang for my buck. Of course, I purposely avoided crowded beaches and nightclubs, as this was a wellness trip; I left feeling refreshed and ready for winter. Traveling solo is undoubtedly not for everyone, but for those prepared to explore Riviera Maya, I recommend traveling with Locogringo, who guided me through every step, from booking my vacation rental to recommending the best venues to visit during my stay.
