We continue on the search for amazing and less explored places to offer our travelers the best recommendations. From romantic getaways to family friendly sites that are usually off the beaten path. If you have been to Tulum or Sian Kaan you know that this part of the world can be magical, but there are places that take our breath away and invite us to stay.. for good. This is the case of Punta Allen, a magical place, an enigmatic piece of land to escape from everything and everyone. Unfortunately not very many know this place and is only 2 hours from Tulum in driving distance. This is definitely a place worth seeing and your ultimate option for relaxation and natural beauty.
Probably the most common mistake is to think that Punta Allen is further than it actually is. It takes no more than 2 hours to drive from Tulum town to Punta Allen. The road you should take is the Tulum-Boca Paila road, as if you go towards Sian Kaan. The road is rough so we suggest you to avoid small vehicles because the road can be bumpy. Other thing you need is a few snacks and drinks because there are very few places to stop in case you get thirsty or hungry. After you pass Sian Kaan and Boca Paila you will arrive to Punta Allen, a little town that remains untouched and offers one of the most beautiful beaches of south Mexico.
As soon as you enter to the town you will see mostly local people, mini stores to purchase basic stuff, one or two ATM´s and just a few hotels/hostals. This little town is exactly what explorers dream about, no noise, no traffic, away from everything and with crystal clear blue waters to swim and snorkel. The few Tour operators will offer boat tours at good rates, snorkel excursions and fishing too. Electricity is limited and so is cell phone signal, they have an electric power station turned on in the morning and turned off after lunch, then on again in the afternoon. Everything there is fairly cheap; food, transportation (cabs) and entertainment. There aren´t many bars but the few ones offer live music and affordable drinks. But the best part is the wonderful flora and fauna of the place. When swimming/snorkeling you get to see dolphins, manatees, turtles and crocodiles. Bird watching is also one of the main activities offered by local fishermen.
We offer accommodations in Sian Kaan that are close to Boca Paila and Punta Allen, this way you could take short trips to Punta Allen and explore the south side of Tulum. If you prefer to stay a few days in Punta Allen there are 3 Hotels and a couple of Hostals to crash a few nights. Transportation is important when planning your trip to Punta Allen, the best option is to rent a Jeep or a similar vehicle and to drive yourself. The second option would be to get a collective (public van) or a cab in Tulum town to Sian Kaan arch. Once there you can request a boat from local Tour Operators to take you to Punta Allen. Boats to Punta Allen are usually available once a day so you would have to make arrangements to return at the same time.
There is no public transportation or shuttle from Tulum to Punta Allen, the road is bumpy and collectivos stopped providing this service years ago. If you prefer we can also arrange a private driver to take you to Punta Allen for a day trip, or pick you up the next day. Either way this piece of heaven should be on your top list of places to visit during your holidays in Riviera Maya.
