A cenote is an underground river that has the shape of a hole on the surface and it is usually deep. Some cenotes are open which means you get to see the fish and other animals living in it with the daylight, then there are others that are hardly visible which make them perfect for divers. The Ruta de los Cenotes (or Cenotes Route) in Puerto Morelos is definitely a “must” in the area. Puerto Morelos is actually the beginning of the Mayan Riviera and the beauty of surroundings include not only the beaches but also the most incredible cenotes in the Caribbean. The Cenotes route is located right on the highway in Puerto Morelos. You should be able to see the arch that represents the entrance, on your right side when driving from Cancun to Tulum. This route is full of incredible cenotes, around 20 different options to swim, snorkel or dive. We have discovered the most important ones so you can explore next time you visit Puerto Morelos.
Cenote Siete Bocas
Is located only 15 Kilometers from the entrance of Cenotes route. It is called Siete Bocas because the place has 7 different acces that are connected by water under the ground. The water connects all seven but you have access to 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. The entrance number 6 and 7 are only for divers. Entrance is 30usd per person and bringing your own drinks and food is recommended since there is no place onsite to buy them.
You may also want to bring your snorkel equipment and towels. They provide all size life jackets. You will also find inside the cenotes, kayaks that you can use but you cannot take out. And for the adrenaline addicts, there is a cliff you can jump to the access number 3. You will descent about 5 meters until you touch the water. These cenotes are open from 9am to 5pm.
Kin Ha Cenotes
Located no more than 20 kilometers from the entrance of Cenotes route. The places has recently improved with activities like ATV´s and zip lines to go through the jungle and explore the area. Kin Ha offer a great option for relaxation and snorkeling and their depth is around 40mts. You can bring your own snacks and drinks but there is a restaurant at the entrance where you can buy them. These open cenotes are perfect for snorkeling since the marine life is visible and the area offers a great variety of exotic plants. These cenotes are open from 8am to 5pm and the price is 20usd per person.
Cenote Boca del Puma
Located in Kilometer 16 from the entrance of Cenotes route. This Eco park offers zip lines, ATV´s, zip lines, rappel in the middle of the jungle, and of course a magnificent cenote to snorkel and swim. The price goes from $90 usd for the combo package that includes all activities and access. You can also purchase on-line the activities separately or include transportation for your party. Boca Del Puma is open from 10am to 6pm every day.
Extra Tips To Enjoy The Cenotes
These are just a few tips and recommendations if you decide to explore the Cenotes route on your own:
- Bring your towel, bathing suit and cash (usd are accepted).
- Wear Bio-friendly sunblock and mosquito repellent.
- Support locals by purchasing the entrance once you arrive at the cenote.
- It is ok to bring snacks or lunch but remember to take the trash with you.
- If you like the service and the place, don´t forget to tip. This also supports local economy.
- Spread the word! Nothing better than your own recommendations for friends and family.
- Snap a picture. This is probably the best souvenir you can get.
