Riviera Maya aerial views and the Mexican Caribbean

Playa del Carmen to Puerto Morelos in the Riviera Maya

This month’s spotlight is a follow up to last month’s aerial photos which covered much of the coastal lands between Boca Paila in the Sian Kaan Biosphere, and Akumal. As compared to our vintage 2003 aerials, the Riviera Maya’s resorts have grown both in number and size. Several large all inclusive resorts now feature new accommodation areas chock full of deluxe features, and a few even have new golf courses. There are developments under construction targeting ex-pat retirees or anyone with the resources to afford a golf club lifestyle, just minutes from the beach. To sum it up, as one would expect, The Riviera Maya is expanding, growing at a speedy pace in anticipation of future needs. It’s anyone’s guess what the future actually has in store but one thing is certain; as long as the beautiful blue Caribbean and sandy beaches are here, the people will come, all trying to capture their piece of paradise, if not on a long term basis, at least for a little while.

  1. JB, January 1, 2014:

I am not finding the aerial view up and down the coasts with the names of properties. We miss that feature. Also it could be me, but I am sorry to say I find the new improved website hard to navigate. sorry.

  2. Loco Gringo, January 2, 2014:

Thanks for your comments Steve. We really appreciate your taking the time to give us feedback! We are currently updating the ariel view feature and will have it back on the site soon. In the meantime, maybe this map link can help. https://www.locogringo.com/maps

  3. Nicole, January 12, 2014:

We too find the new site harder to navigate – sorry! because we love locogringo. The maps with the property names were SO helpful in determining where we wanted to stay, and the local information used to be more intimate – we used to could read detailed information about Akumal’s restaurants for example, and now the information posted is just more generic and cold. We found and started booking with locogringo because of that knowledge – it sounded like they really knew the area and the people. Now it has a feel of any other travel website. So sorry to be critical, hopefully the feedback helps. We are figuring out our next two trips of the year and are missing the help of the old info.

  4. LocoGringo, January 13, 2014:

Thansk for you feedback and we are sorry that you find the new site different from the old one. What you will find on the new site is more up to date information that our old one and more stories to read through. The Looal Scoop blog has far more information that is written every day and shows the new and the old! We understand that this format is different for our clients but with a little bit of searching you will find some great new information that was missing before. The aerial tours is a huge project and that did require some important updates so in a few months you will be able to enjoy that again!!!

Thanks for hanging out on Locogringo and your feedback is always worth its weight in gold.

I can’t find the forums or webcam from the new site. I end up having to do a google search. Can you help with that? Thanks!

  6. Darrell, January 23, 2014:

I also really miss the aerial views with the names of all the villas/resorts/etc. and links to each one…
Planning a trip and was hoping to “virtually tour” using this very tool.

  7. Loco Gringo, January 23, 2014:

Hi Sharon, The forums can be reached from the home page. Move your cursor over the “Connect” tab on the top bar and a drop down menu with “Forums” pops up. Click there. http://forums.locogringo.com/forums/

The webcam can be found by moving your cursor over the top bar tab “Exclusively Loco Gringo” where a drop down menu will appear and you can choose either the Tulum Beach cam or the Akumal Beach cam. https://www.locogringo.com/akumal-beach-webcam

Please bring back the flight down the coast. It is very helpful for planning and exploring.

  9. Dan, February 24, 2014:

Agree with the other comments – the aerial view with resort names that you could drag along the Riviera Maya was literally the coolest website I’ve ever seen. Please bring it back with the updated views!! Muchas Gracias!

  10. Loco Gringo, February 24, 2014:

Hold on Dan. We will have the updated aerial views back on the website very soon!

  11. Lynne Marden, February 24, 2014:

I also miss the flyover views – and being able to see what resorts will have sales going on, on their own web page. Having to see it on the forums area just seems complicated. Love you guys, but new website… not so much.

  12. Loco Gringo, February 25, 2014:

The new aerial tours are coming soon! The new aerial tours are better than the old ones so hang on! They are coming!!!

  13. Laura, March 2, 2014:

    Dear Locogringo,
I am a longtime fan/user of LG and traveler to the Yucatan. I am wondering WHEN the aerial tour maps will be returned to the LG site? You have been promising for two months and asking for our patience but still without any idea as to WHEN or why we must keep waiting. Can you advise with a date as to when your service will return? !Mil gracias!

  14. Mary, March 5, 2014:

We are all ready to go again in May and I can’t stop thinking about it. We always have a great time. When we started planning this one, I was bummed like the others in that the aerial view map which you could scroll down and see all the properties was gone. It really was one of the greatest tools I have ever used for planning anything. I am glad you are working on getting that up and running again, but also understand what a huge undertaking that must be. Really appreciate all the effort. You are always so helpful as well. My real problem is the forums – I can’t pinpoint the info I may want. That isn’t your fault, that’s just User Inexperience. :-)

  15. Loco Gringo, March 6, 2014:

Thanks so much for your patience, Mary. It is a huge undertaking and we want to make sure we get it just right! As for the forums, feel free to ask the users for help in finding what you are looking for. They are a great group of folks who LOVE to help other Riviera Maya fans.

  16. Pam, March 8, 2014:

Miss the old site with the Arial maps! we could move along the coast line and look at the all inclusive resorts in perspective to where we have been and were we want to go next, please bring it back, I probably wont use this site again other wise, thanks pam

  17. Kay, March 11, 2014:

Pam, we are about to roll out the aerial maps in the next week… We will be doing it bit by bit going down the coast!

  18. Kay, March 11, 2014:

Laura we are so glad you are a fan of the aerial maps! We should be rolling them out within the next week. We are upgrading the technology so it takes time so we can give you the best experience cruising up and down the coast line.

  19. Janine, March 22, 2014:

Alarmed!!! I LOVE your aerial maps and attempted to access on your new site, Of course I see now that you are updating them, but a very misleading arrow to turn page led me to a home fuel website. I clicked it three times before I realized you have placed ads, I understand but am bummed. I lovedthe maps around Punta Allen and Sian Kaan, stunning! Also, its the 21st of March, will the maps be up soon? I wanted to look at villas for an upcoming trip. would love to use you guys, if only I could see these views ;)

  20. Kay, March 24, 2014:

    Janine, good morning.
We are rolling out the aerial tour north to south, and each week we will have more photos. For Sian Kaan it is going to be a few more weeks before we get that far south. We are happy to help you find a rental, and depending on which rentals you are interested in we may be able to send you an aerial photo or to to help! Thanks for your patience, its a big coast line! Please email us at [email protected]

  21. MITCH, April 16, 2014:

Yes, I agree,. Really missing the ariel tour, it has been invaluable in the past in finding a condo with a good beach for snorkeling daily. We have been travelling to the Mayan Riviera for some time and are needing it to find another condo on the beach of our chosing…

  22. LocoGringo, April 16, 2014:

The aerial tours are up and running! Please access the page under ‘Ways to Play’ on our website where we have put the pages under Aerial Maps. They are better and gbigger now that we have completed the update! Enjoy the new look!

  23. a, June 16, 2014:

I’m not sure exactly why but this site is loading incredibly slow for me.
Is anyone else having this problem or is it a problem on my end?
I’ll check back later on and see if the
    problem still exists.

  24. Kay Walten, June 18, 2014:

Hi thanks for the comment. Can you tell me what operating system you are using, the browser and version? We can have tech support see what may be affecting your load time. Thanks
