If there’s one thing you can find in Mahahual, it’s downright tasty food in a paradise you can scarcely imagine. Most of us travel on a budget, and we have great news. Anywhere you go in Mahahual, you’re just steps away from delicious, affordable food that will ignite your taste buds, fill you up, and leave pesos in your wallet. Let’s take a look at just a few of the most affordable restaurants for you to try on your next trip to Mahahual.
Strolling down the Malecon, you’re likely to meet a character who calls himself Charlie Brown, offering you a margarita on the house. Yes, take the bait. You’ve arrived at El Faro, and you’ll be glad you succumbed to Charlie Brown’s temptation. The vibe at El Faro Beach Club is amazing, with so many coconut palms for shade, you’ll find no need for a palapa. After being quickly seated, you’ll have cocktails or cerveza delivered at lightning speed. They serve two excellent ceviches here – shrimp (cameron) and mixed (shrimp and fish) in your choice of either medium or large portions. Another great choice is El Faro’s Cameron Cocktail, a deliciously sweet and tangy sauce loaded with shrimp and onions with cilantro and limes on the side. With either choice, you won’t be overly full, and you definitely won’t be hungry. El Faro is located just south of the central Malecon on Mahahual beach.
Nam Nam isn’t exactly fast food. They take their time in preparing your order, but once it arrives, you’ll know it was worth the wait. US $3.65 for a single, or $4.70 for a double, this deal can’t be beaten. There are few tables available here, as this is mostly a take-out joint. But that’s okay, just find someplace along the beach to relax and enjoy your mouth-watering burger. Nam Nam is located just off the Malecon, on the corner of Calle Cherna and Calle Huachinago.
Yaya Beach is a spacious, airy, palm-shaded beach club on the Malecon and a great place to settle down in a lounge chair and put your toes in the sand with a Cuba Libre, Pina Colada or ice-cold cerveza. As the background music chills you out, Yaya’s world-class waitstaff will keep the drinks flowing for the duration of your stay on the beach. Their menu is a mix of platters for every taste, from Caribbean Mexican to Italian. For US $5, treat yourself to Yaya’s Guacamole fries, or Nachos Deluxe for $9 USD. You’ll definitely want to try their grilled octopus. The pasta here is excellent, and for a real Mediterranean flare, try Yaya’s refreshing Capri or Santorini salads, served with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
On the south end of the Malecon lies a beached ark. Your captain isn’t Noah, he’s an Italian cook, and he knows his craft. Climb aboard into a cozy atmosphere for delicious thin-crust wood-fired oven pizza and live music on the weekend. Order a large pepperoni for only 120 pesos. Arco’s vegetarian pizza is fantastic, made to order with any number of in-season vegetables, cheese, and spices. Or, get adventurous and order Arco’s Pizza Cameron (pizza with shrimp). If you’re craving an omelet, good news, Arca also serves breakfast, and coffee is made fresh with your order. They’re open daily from 8:30 am to 10:00 pm.
Walk the Malecon south from the lighthouse, and the first restaurant on your right will be Blue Kay, where you’ll find a palapa bar and grill in the sand and a sizable beach club where you can sling yourself into a hammock or sink into a lounge chair on the beach and let the trade winds rock you into a tropical nap. You can’t go wrong here, after all, you’re in paradise! Carla manages Blue Kay, and you’ll see her there day and night, overseeing the kitchen and bar and making sure everything that comes out is of the highest quality. Just ask Lisa from Florida, who said between bites of chips and guacamole that it was the best she’s ever had and she’ll definitely be back. If you’re looking for an inexpensive meal at Blue Kay, order the Tacos Cameron (Shrimp Tacos). You’re welcome. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
