When visiting the beautiful islands in the Mexican Caribbean, you cannot miss the Ferry ride. It is one of the coolest and fastest ways to visit Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, and Holbox islands. This type of transportation is like a tour itself because the ride is enjoyable and comfortable. If you are about to visit any of the islands and want to find out more about rates and other details, you should be familiar with the two main Ferry companies; Winjet and Ultramar. In the end, you can always contact us to request a quotation or get a FREE and personalized itinerary of your dream vacation in Riviera Maya.
The rides are mostly short, depending on your final destination. Rides from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel take around 45 minutes. Rides from Cancun to Isla Mujeres take around 15-20 minutes. And rides from Chiquila to Holbox island take around 30 minutes in total. We highly recommend our travelers to find out exactly what marine or port they will be departing from, before visiting any of the islands. Every island has its Ferry location and it is not the same for every island. To visit Isla Mujeres you must depart from Cancun, and there are 3 different Ferry stations. For Holbox, you have to catch a ride from either Cancun or Riviera Maya to Chiquila port. Once there, the ferry or boats to Holbox take about 30 minutes. And to visit Cozumel, the Ferry must be taken from Playa del Carmen, and it takes about 45 minutes to get to the island.
The Ferry is a lot more than just fast and practical transportation. The ride is pretty enjoyable and the facilities are nice, with great service. First of all, the view is amazing, even more, if you get a seat on the top area of the Ferry. Some Ferries feature live music, salsa, cumbia, Cuban, traditional, or even Mariachi music. All of them have the air conditioning on the lowers part or cabin, and the seats are comfortable. A few of them even have a bar inside and offer drinks and snacks, especially the ones to Cozumel. They are also adapted to fit the needs of travelers with reduced mobility. And there is a designated area for travelers with pets, at no extra cost.
The schedule for the Ferries is pretty much the same, the first one departs usually around 5:30 am, and then one Ferry departs every 30 minutes until 10:30 pm. This service is available 24/7 all 365 days of the year. The rates might vary according to the distance or the island you are visiting. Some Ferry companies offer a discount for kids from 5 to 8 years old, and the kids under 4 years old are usually free of charge. For Isla Mujeres, the rate is $11:00usd for one way and $17.00usd for round trip. For Cozumel, the rate is $8.00usd one way, and $16.00usd round trip. To Holbox, the rate is $80.00 pesos one way, and $160.00 pesos round trip. *This does not include the ground transportation to Chiquila port from anywhere in Riviera Maya or from Cancun.
As an extra tip, there is also a vehicle Ferry from Riviera Maya to cross to Cozumel. The rates depend on the type of car but are usually affordable and more practical than renting a car, golf cart or bike on the island.
