Tulum Ranked One of the Top Five Best Beaches in the World

Tulum was recently named one of the five best beaches in the world by Flight Network, a Canada-based online travel platform.

The boho beach town in the Riviera Maya caps a list of top five best beaches in the world that include: Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos, Greece; Whitehaven in Queensland, Australia; Hidden Beach in El Nido, Philippines; and Praia do Sancho in Pernambuco, Brazil.

Tulum Beach is a quintessential destination for travelers on the hunt for an idyllic, serene getaway,” said Flight Network writers. “Stunning white sands and bright teal waters combine to create a beach that leaves an indelible imprint on travelers.”

The praise comes as Tulum beaches have faced a challenging year due to the sargassum (seaweed) that collected upon the shores of the Riviera Maya and the Caribbean coastline. Mexican environmental officials installed containment barriers earlier this year to stave off the seaweed and are expected to declare this month Quintana Roo, the state in which Tulum is located, as sargassum free.

When bright and clear, Tulum beaches are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling. To get there, follow Coba Road east. Along the way, you’ll see excellent restaurants, deluxe beach cabañas, and boutique accommodations. Farther south on Beach Road is the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

Flight Network’s annual ranking of top beach destinations was compiled from a survey of 1,200 travel industry professionals, including journalists, bloggers, and agencies from around the world who “eat, sleep, and breathe travel.”

According to Flight Network’s ranking, Tulum was also singled out for “The ‘beach strip,’ which runs the length of the beach, offers a collection of bohemian-esque restaurants and accommodations, ensuring you can always be within a few steps of the powder-like sand and sparkling water Tulum is known for.”

Tulum has previously received similar designations from National Geographic Traveler, U.S. News Travel, CNN, and traveler reviews on Trip Advisor.

While it’s nice to see Tulum receive so much attention for its spectacular qualities, equally as important is the dedication among its residents and business owners to maintain the natural beauty of Tulum through sustainable building and environmental practices.

Whether you travel to Tulum for the day or stay at one of its many vacation home rentals, this delicate, environmentally sensitive, culturally-rich area is not to be missed. Fantastic rentals in Tulum are still available for Christmas and New Year’s.
