Did you know that the Mexican Riviera has long been a celebrities’ secret hideaway?
How exactly they discovered this Mayan Eden is unclear, but they keep coming back year after year and Casa del Sol located in the beautiful Yal ku Lagoon is proof of this fact. This amazing property is well-known by locals as the “Casa of the Grateful Dead”. It is said that this accommodation was owned by one of Grateful Dead’s band members.
Indeed, Casa del Sol does combine the romantic vibe of the Yal Ku Lagoon and the hippy aura of a rock-star owned villa. There is no denying that Casa del Sol exudes a funky and eclectic atmosphere with its unique decorations that blend perfectly with the colorful Mayan culture and tropical location.
Let me take you on a VIP tour of the house…
The ground level of Casa del Sol consists of a private casita with a king-size bed, an en-suite bathroom and a mini-kitchen.
The second level hosts two stylish bedrooms. The first room has two twin beds and a double bed, which makes it a perfect alternative for kids or a group of friends. The second bedroom is just as light and airy as the first one, offering its guests a comfortable double and a single bed.
The third level of the villa is where the grand master bedroom, with an en-suite bathroom and a private palapa patio is located. This is the room you could rightly claim for yourself.
And if you have more friends joining you, you can always accommodate them in the tower bedroom. Besides offering head-spinning views of Yal ku Lagoon it comes with a double bed and a futon.
It is also worth mentioning that each of the villa’s 5 bedrooms feature unique designs with their Caribbean-inspired murals, richly-colored silk fabrics and high quality hardwood furnishings.
A true celebrity accommodation would not be complete without a magnificent pool and a few extra ‘luxuries’.
Therefore, Casa del Sol spoils its guests with ultimate relaxation and awes them with unexpected discoveries.
Here an ordinary swim in the pool may turn into a session of hydrotherapy massage, as the cascading waters of the newly built waterfall work wonders in washing all tension and stress away.
Similar, the concept of a traditional Mexican siesta will be taken to a whole new level. Just grab a good book, pick one of the hammocks under the beach palapa and let the light ocean breeze and the views of the Yal ku lagoon transport you to another world.
Moreover, even the sunsets when observed from the Casa del Sol’s roof deck turn into a must-see show. As the ephemeral rays of the setting sun bathe the horizon, nature comes to life with beautiful tropical birds floating in the air.
It is in moments like this that we feel overwhelming joy, true bonding and unconditional love for the whole Universe. And this feeling is more precious than any luxury money can buy.
Those who have experienced it, keep coming back to Casa del Sol year after year, some booking their stay 6-8 months in advance.
So if you want to secure your slice of Mayan Eden, you’d better hurry!

We really enjoyed the grounds and the "outdoor room" The new pool is a nice touch. I could tell from the work that has been done, the owners are committed to improving an already great property.

I loved staying here. We'd cook our own meals, but got our senor to cook a special birthday dinner for us too. Every morning we'd snorkel in the lagoon before breakfast (before the tour buses got there). Quiet and peaceful and the fish were amazing. Walks in to Akumal during the day for ice cream with Kahlua on it (yum) and more snorkeling. Everything was great at this property and would love to stay there again.
My only comment is not on the property, but on Akumal in general. It's just quite a drive if you want to go anywhere - Cancun, Merida. Tulum is closer but still a time commitment. Went south for some fishing also.
But if you are fine with doing activities in the Riviera Maya region - THIS is the place to stay!

I stayed with a group of 8 at Casa del Sol back in 2005. The house is just amazing. Great spaces to hang out, fantastic decorating and atmosphere. The pictures don't do it justice.
We spent each morning out adventuring and the afternoons in the hammocks or snorkeling in the lagoon that you can enter from the property.
One of our last nights we had our wonderful hosts cook dinner for us, fantastic butterflied shrimp! Highly recommended!
Using the outdoor shower on the roof is a must!
I would love to visit again some day.

We had a wonderful week at Casa Del Sol and hope to return one day!

It's funky but fun. A great house to celebrate a special event with a big group. Being right on the lagoon was awesome. We had a couple of rainy days and there was plenty if space to play games and chill out. We rented bikes and rode to akumal beach - easy.
Love this house, and the location. We rented bikes again so we could ride back and forth to Akumal beach, and spend long afternoons under the palapas at La Buena Vida. Don't count on internet access though - the router was down 99% of the 8 days we were there. We have been spending time in Akumal for many years, and as we knew would happen, it has been discovered and is now very expensive, and a little less charming. The Dreams resort currently under construction and will surely overrun Akumal beach, so get to Akumal soon and enjoy this house while you can!
