History has it that thousands of years ago a great Mayan lord Ek Balam (meaning “black Jaguar”) founded one of the biggest cities of Mayan civilization.
It thrived for centuries, but then was abandoned and lost in the jungle. And while you may not get a chance to visit this place, you can still spend your vacation in a unique villa, designed by the famous architect Jose Luis Moreno and named after the great Mayan leader.
Casa Balam Ek offers its guests an airy living room, a cozy fully equipped kitchen, a beautiful dining room and 4 spacious bedrooms that can comfortably accommodate up to 8 people.
The artful ‘touches’ of the famous architect are seen in the unique structure, a very cool and original Casita ‘feature’ that you will find out about later and the clever layout of the house. Casa Balam Ek truly makes the most of the Caribbean breeze and stunning ocean views by having all the rooms face the beach.
Even if you are traveling with children and a big group of people there will be no more arguing over who gets what room. They all come with comfortable beds, private bathrooms and cleaning services 6 days a week, so you will not have to worry about anything, but rest and relaxation.
Besides the main house, Balam Ek also includes an adjoining Casita apartment, perfect for a small family or a couple.
The Casita includes a tastefully decorated bedroom with a king-size bed and an en-suite bathroom, a full kitchen, and a cozy dining area.
But one of the best ‘features’ of the Casita mentioned earlier is undoubtedly an outdoor Jacuzzi tub, located on the upper level right outside the bathroom window.
Taking a bath here and making a wish on the shooting stars is something any romantic couple should try at least once.
During the day there are plenty of other activity options for both children and adults, like taking a refreshing swim in the pool, exploring the wonders of the underwater world, tasting new freshly-prepared dishes and cocktails at the local beach restaurant or taking a nap in one of the hammocks placed for you on the oceanfront terrace. This is what they call “La Buena Vida” in Mexico!
For your convenience Casa Balam Ek also has a complete entertainment system, wi-fi, 2 iPod dock stations and satellite TV. So make sure to bring your camera, your laptop or an iPad. Otherwise how will you share the beauty of Ek Balam and Riviera Maya with your friends and relatives back home?
But before you start to pack your suitcases, remember to check the availability for this unique villa named after an unusual man! Inquire about this vacation villa!
NOTICE: Just like the sand on our beaches, availability shifts constantly. We coordinate reservations and availability with local people here. Add Casa Balam Ek to your inquiry so we can reconfirm that your preferred dates are still open.

In general, our stay was fantastic. The house was perfect for us - five adults and two kids. Only a few little things were wrong - one kayak leaked, one upstairs bath had no hot water until we complained. But those are not really big deals for us in the long run. We had a wonderful time, the house was large enough, Antonia kept it clean and cooked for us twice. All went well.

Kitchen was excellent plenty of utensils, cutting boards, etc. Best appointed kitchen I have been to in the Roo.

Our drive to the airport @ 4AM was horrendous. We got stopped by one policeman who demanded that we open our wallets and give him all the $$ ($300.00) Shortly later, we got stopped by another policeman and showed him our empty wallets. He took us to an ATM machine. Luckily, it didn't take our American Express. A bad experience at the end of a wonderful vacation.

This is a beautiful house with amazing ocean views. You're on a rocky coast so don't plan to swim here, but you can walk to the gorgeous beach in Akumal in about 5 minutes. Also walking distance to the many great local restaurants and shops. Small but deep pool, plenty of outdoor seating areas (sunny and shady) plus a private upstairs patio.

We loved our stay at Casa Balam Ek and it was just what the doctor ordered in that it was quiet, well appointed, clean and peaceful (actually serenely peaceful). Not knowing exactly what to expect, I had my reservations as did my husband, but those quickly fell away as soon as we settled in. This was the first visit to Mexico by my 8 year old grandson and was the very best way to indoctrinate a youngster to travel to another country over an extended period. He'd go again in a heartbeat. We laughed that he and my son-in-law could both "go native" and be happy as clams in Akumal. They absolutely loved the snorkeling in Akumal and happily stayed for hours in the water. They did not fish, but I'm positive they'd have loved that too!

Simply amazing. 3rd time to The Roo and 1st time at Casa Balam Ek. The grounds were beautiful and the housekeeping was exceptional. Ingrid the property manager was attentive, and went out of her way to help us with a dental emergency. She was great. Will definitely stay there again!

We stayed in the house and casita with our kids and another family with kids. It was perfect! The kids had more fun searching for hermit crabs than they did swimming. The house staff was amazing and the location was minutes from the best snorkeling and some great restaurants.

We'?ve been vacationing in Akumal for nearly 20 years. Casa Balam Ek was one of our favorite stays. The house is comfortable, clean and very cute. The view is great. The location between the two beaches is perfect. It??s stumble home distance from the Buena Vida. Will stay again.

We loved the house - the kids and grandkids were awestruck at the view of the ocean upon our arrival. The house was perfect with a lot of room, all the stuff we needed to prepare meals and relax. Had fun with the kayaks including some races to Half Moon Bay and back. WE also loved Tico the guard dog - he was fun to play with and he was also A VERY GOOD guarddog at night. We all loved the beach at Akumal; went fishing and snorkeling, made sand castles and animals in the sand. Great restaurants and the Bakery/coffee shop was a daily treat. The maid service was super, as was the manager and groundskeeper - definately made our stay very relaxing.
The place is magic and the house very well located and beautiful, the problem is that the pool never used it because the cleaner did not get it and also one of the air conditioners did not work
This is a beautiful place with some unique features. Well maintained by friendly staff. This house has everything you could think of (kitchen supplies, books, games, beach towels, hairdryer) Stairs in casita are not for the elderly and hot tub is really a bathtub with no safety rail so we opted out of that. Great place, no complaints.
The house was a perfect location at this time year to get some of the most incredible sunrises every single morning's location and proximity to everything is very convenient with you wanted to walk or just jump on a bike and ride. It everything we needed to start cooking and entertaining I would highly recommend this villa. And one thing you don't hear much about or think about is our housekeeper she was absolutely fantastic I wish I had her in my home here in the states don't get me wrong by wife does a great job in taking care of our home.
The house was in excellent shape and as described. The house-keeping and grounds-keeping staff did a great job. If traveling to Akumal we would stay here again, but we might try somewhere else next time...While catch and release fishing appears legal in this area (/, ), there is a strong cultural norm against any shore fishing and folks will yell at you if you are fishing. The house itself was a great base however for exploring Akumal and the surrounding area. I would recommend a rental car or be geared for a little bit of walking - it's about 1 km to town/taxis and 1.4 km to YalKu Lagoon (there are a couple of nice restaurants closer).
We were extremely pleased with our stay. This was our 3rd house rental in Akumal and the service provided was the best so far. We had a few issues with the safe locking but they were there in a matter of 5-10 minutes. This is a great location within .5 miles to Akumal and close to La Buena Vida.
We had 4 couples (8 people) staying here for two weeks in Feb/2016. The house was great and the space was ample for all of us. We could be together if we wanted, or spread out for some alone time. The rooms were great and everything worked as expected. The housekeeper was wonderful and kept the place in great shape. The only complaints were minor:a) The internet stopped working. They replaced the WIFI unit within the day and after that it worked great.b) Sometimes the hot water went out. A quick call solved that problem. We encountered a dispute going on between the land owners and the residents of Akumal which made access to Akumal beach more difficult. Although the main beach entry was blocked, we had no problems getting onto the beach. We were able to access the beach through the dive shop or by walking around the point past the Cannon House. All in all, we loved the house and Akumal in general (especially Turtle Bay Cafe). We would come back in a heartbeat.
We found the location of the property to be too far from most restaurants and activities. The pool is EXTREMELY small. 3rd couple could not move the 2 beds together, had to sleep separately.
We had a great relaxing week here. Unfortunately did not try many different restaurants as we kept going to happy hour at La Buena Vida restaurant which led to us just having supper there most nights. One night we did have dinner prepared for us at the home, a great meal which I would highly recommend. We snorkeled from the dock one day, difficult entry but nice once you got in. Another day we entered from La Buena Vida We swam further along half moon bay for the exit both times. Swimming with the turtles is a must in Akumal Bay, we went here 4 times during the week, beautiful beach and so many turtles. Go early as it gets very busy as the day goes on. About 1KM easy walk from the home. The home is very well equipped, daily cleaning, everything in the pantry that you would ever need in a kitchen. If you are interested in the Akumal area this would be a great choice.
