It is said that when the famous diver and explorer Pablo Bush Romero first saw Akumal Bay, he immediately fell in love with the place. What’s not to love? The calm and clear waters of the Caribbean, protected by a barrier reef; pristine white sands, and world-class snorkeling just off the surf line – Akumal Bay is truly one-of-a-kind tropical paradise.
Even today, Akumal remains one of the few places in the Riviera Maya (and probably the entire Caribbean) where first-class beach living does not come with a first-class price tag. Villas Maya Bungalows are a great example of barefoot-luxury on a budget.
The bungalow rooms at Villas Maya, surrounded by lush greenery and palm trees, blend in perfectly with the tropical surroundings. Oozing the charm of a small village home, each of the Villas Maya bungalows is spotless, spacious and serene.
All of the rooms are air-conditioned and come with full bathrooms, king-size or double beds, ceiling fans, free Wi-Fi and small refrigerators. Some double bed rooms have kitchenettes (see Amenities section for more details). Although with so many great and reasonably-priced restaurants around, you really don’t have to worry about cooking.
The magnificent Akumal Bay and powdery white beach is just 2 minute walk away from Villas Maya. No matter how many times you see pictures of Akumal beach, it is even more beautiful in real life. The satin-smooth stretch of white sand gradually disappears into the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, creating a perfect background for lounging, beach combing, sand-castle building or snorkeling with turtles and tropical fish.
The great news is that guests of Villas Maya bungalows get pool privileges at Hotel Akumal Caribe, located just 100 feet away from the bungalows and overlooking the Caribbean. Next door to the Hotel Akumal Caribe, you’ll also find the Lol Ha restaurant, a pizzeria, a dive shop and a snack bar.
Savvy travelers, looking to add a touch of adventure, history and culture to their relaxing beach vacation will love the fact that Akumal is close to the best sights Riviera Maya has to offer. In less than half an hour you can climb the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum, snorkel in Yal Ku Lagoon or walk along Playa del Carmens hip 5th Ave.
Akumal Bay is believed to be ‘one of the best beaches of Riviera Maya’ and Villas Maya Bungalows ‘the best deal in Akumal’. It’s really a no-brainer, so add it to your inquiry asap and tell us if you loved it when you’ll get back. Add this hotel to your inquiry so you can have one of the best deals in Akumal.
We represent so many small, quaint facilities, privately-owned homes and we coordinate availability with local people. Add Villas Maya Bungalows to your inquiry, we will get back with you, confirm availability and of course, answer any question you might have!

Our stay, though short, was better than expected.
The bungalow is located close to everything one might need; food, beach, beverages, sand & sun.
Can't think of anything negative to add.

I really enjoyed my holiday at your resort! People were friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and I really enjoyed the food. The toilet did leak water on the floor though but that was promptly seen to and taken care of. So the service was exemplary.

We love the quiet atmosphere of VMB, the rooms are spacious, not luxurious but very comfortable and well maintained. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. We had a room with king bed and a couch ... enjoyed having the couch to sit on. Of course the very close proximity to Akumal Bay is one of the top reasons we continue to return to this property.

This is the first time (of many) we've had an actual mattress and box spring in a bungalow. Very comfortable. We stay in the bungalows basically when we're on our own. They are great, basic places to hang your hat, or whatever. And the location, right behind the Lol Ha is perfect. Some people are concerned about noise or dust, but we've never been bothered by either.

This is a beautiful hotel and town. We had reserved a bungalow on the advice of a friend but we were put right next to the dive shop and it was very noisy and not very private. We moved to the hotel and the room was lovely and the view and breezes off the beach great. The one thing we had a bad time with were the beds. They were hard as a brick and very uncomfortable. At first we thought is just the first one in the bungalow but both of the beds in the hotel room were the same. The rest of the vacation was great, especially the snorkeling but unfortunately the aching back after a week will probably keep us from returning to this property.

Coming back here is like coming home, basic but roomy and we have had a little kitchenette each time. Suites our needs perfectly. We find the location very quiet, close to all the amenities and a quick stroll to the beach. We ate several times at both the Lol Ha Restaurant and the beach bar.Staff was really friendly and helpful.
We will come back again and again.

This was our second stay at Villas Maya Bungalows. As we expected, and the reason we returned,it was fabulous! The king sized bed was comfortable and even though we didn't ask, our linens were changed daily. Water pressure and temperature in the shower were perfect. Our water dispenser was refilled when it got low. The air conditioning never missed a beat; in fact, it worked so well we had to turn it off a few times because it was so cool. We had free internet in our room and it also worked perfectly. We had requested the same bungalow we had last fall and were so happy it was ready for us when we arrived. We also asked about the hotel rooms and connecting bungalows for future trips with family and within three minutes, there was someone to tour us and answer our questions. We had no problems this trip but last year, when the air conditioner stopped suddenly, there was a crew there with a new one within the hour. The maid service was tops and we had fresh flowers in our room every day. The fridge is perfect for two or three people (larger than the one at the AI we have gone to in the past). It was a short walk (under a minute) to the best beach on Akumal Bay. The guys brought our chairs to our palapa every day. We had meals at Loquito's Snack Bar, Akumal Loncheria, LolHa, Turtle Bay and Pescadors. The food and service at the restaurants is unbeatable. The bungalows are a great place to stay if you want R&R, or if you need a "homebase" for day trips to Tulum and Playa del Carmen. The collectivo stop is a short walk from the Bungalows, and taxis are always available. We booked both trips to the Bungalows through Locogringo.com and we will never use anyone else for travel to the Rivera Maya. It was so comforting to know we could pop on the website forums before and during our trip and get updates on anything which might be happening from frequent travelers and those just returning from the area. I can't wait to go back!
This last visit we stayed at the Bungalows and the Hotel Akumal Caribe. Both were just lovely. The Bungalow rooms are a little more simple, but they are spacious and very clean. The Hotel is a great location next to the pool and the beach. No matter which one you stay in you get beach loungers and a palapa (of which there are plenty to chose from) on the best beach in Akumal. You can't go wrong.

Akumal is the best place I have been to in Mexico. I felt very safe here and had no concerns exploring the area. The room was simple and clean. The location to the beach was fabulous! The price was very fair for 2 people and I loved that it wasn't all inclusive because I was able to eat at some great local restaurants.

We stayed her for 5 worry-free nights. We were debating whether to stay at Half Moon Bay or Central Akumal. We are SO glad we chose Akumal beach. We had wanted to get a room at Hotel Caribe b/c it was advertised as "beach front" but since it was sold out, we reluctantly stayed at Villas Maya. We are SO glad we did. Villas Maya is really beach front, too. It is so close to everything, including the beach and restaurants. Villas Maya is very quaint. It is not a 5 star hotel, but then again, there aren't any in Akumal. It did have everything we needed to relax and enjoy ourselves. The AC worked, the sheets were changed, we had a big 5 gallon water tank, the shower worked, etc. The staff were really lovely and warm. Villas Maya is such a lovely change from the all-inclusive, mega 'resort' hotel. Very laid back but comfortable.

Stayed in Villas Maya Bungalows 20 years ago and decided to go back. Am only home a couple of weeks and very happy at the decision to try them again. Of course, everything has been up-graded but the laid-back feel of the place remains the same. The rooms are large enough for a longer stay and located right on the best part of the bay. They now include an American breakfast at Lol Ha restaurant, which is located just a few steps away and right on the water. So you can sit on the deck and watch the bay while enjoying a delicious breakfast -- food was first rate and presented beautifully. The service was excellent with the most friendly staff both at bungalow and restaurant. The bugalows are kept spotless and we felt safe during our entire visit to the area. This is an exceptional value for the price -- nothing fancy about bungalow, but clean and functional. Lol Ha is more up-scale. We treated outselves to our last night's dinner there -- excellent! The pool is a little walk, but really nothing and is also right on the beach.

My wife and I found these Bungalows while visiting Akumal in 2009. On our first trip we stayed at a Beautiful condo on Halfmoon Bay which was excellent except for location. We thought it would be nice to stay close to the beach when we came back. We were not disapointed in our choice. We found the Bungalows clean and well kept. They are older but very comfortable. Being part of the resort we were able to have use of the many lounges and palapa's on the beach as well, which adds to the comfort. We spent our time relaxing, snorkleing and on short walks. It did get a bit noisy in our Bungalow on occasion when a large group moved in next to us and felt they were more important than all the rest but generally it was what we had hoped.
On both of our visits to Akumal it has been at the end of our vacation and have found it a great place to slow down and relax before returning home. Villa Maya provided us with all we needed to do this. We plan on returning!

We were looking for someplace quiet and clean where we could snorkel off the beach, and this fit the bill nicely.
The room was small but very clean. Location was fantastic! Walk across the small sand road and you are at the beach. Very quiet place, even at night. Each bungalow is attached to one other, like a duplex, with a common foyer.
The room comes with breakfast vouchers at LolHa, the restaurant, not the snack bar, which we weren't expecting. It was a nice surprise. You can choose the continental breakfast or you get a discount equal to the continental price on something else. Good food; I recommend the chiliquiles! We sat on the porch which was open most of the time. When it was really windy, they enclosed it with clear-ish plastic. The breakfast place didn't open very early though (9:00 or 9:30?), so if you are doing excursions that start early somewhere else, you'll miss getting to use your breakfast voucher. This happened to us three times.
There are beach chairs for guests, which you get each day by asking at the snack bar for someone to unlock the beach chair hut for you. Make sure you ask for a chair cushion, too. There is a special section of the beach roped off for guests with lots of palm trees and a few palapas for shade (the beach chairs have to stay in this area). This area was never what I would call crowded. We were able to get a palapa nearly every day.
The staff removed all the seaweed from the beach every morning and kept it extremely clean. You can walk right off the beach and snorkel. There is sea grass for a while, then some empty sand, but keep going and there are lots of coral formations! We saw many turtles, both in the sea grass and the coral areas, as well as barracuda, cuttlefish, and large schools of purple fish. If you don't want to buy an underwater camera, you can rent one at the dive shop for the day and they will put all your pictures on a CD and color-correct them for you. It's a good deal.
Only one complaint about the property: we were supposed to get a room with a kitchenette, and what we actually got was a room with a sink, coffee maker, and small fridge. Where the burners were supposed to be on the stove, there were pieces of wood. The stove was non-functional, and even if it had been, there were no cooking utensils... only plates, bowls, cups and silverware. Our neighboring bungalow was a non-kitchenette one, and they had much more space because there was no breakfast bar/counter sticking out into their room. If I went again, I would choose that, because you get the same functionality and more space.
And finally, a comment on the weather: We were there the last week of February, and the last couple days of our trip we had some trouble because of the wind. I got chilly sitting on the beach in my swimsuit. If you go then, bring a light sweather or jacket. There was only one day where it was so windy that we did not sit on the beach at all and could not snorkel. We sat at the pool to get away from the sand blowing around. There are not very many good places to be if you want to sit around and read and it is windy. You cannot snorkel when it is that windy because the water becomes very turbid and you can't see a thing.
Rooms are always clean!
Hotel staff are always friendly and helpful!
Grounds are always clean!
Wifi service needs some work-didn't work most of 2 week stay(in the snack bar).
Hunting the beach chair guy down every morning was an inconvenience.

We thought the Bungalows were very nice and certainly the price is right. The rooms are spotless and spacious and the location is great as far as proximity to the beach.
Walk just two or three minutes to see that gorgeous water, the dive shop and Lol Ha. They are very central to the local restaurants, galleries, and groceries.
We were especially grateful that we had a nice strong shower with plenty of hot water after a day spent snorkeling and on the beach.
The only thing I would suggest is to have more hooks for hanging wet suits and snorkel gear.
Otherwise, we thought the Bungalows were a great fit for us on this trip.

The property is maintained in excellent condition - inside as well as out. The rooms are spacious, light, and airy. All staff is helpful and pleasant; most are bi-or tri-lingual. Food is well-cooked; a variety of Mexican and American dishes with lots of choices - you could stay two weeks and not eat the same thing twice! Only issue I had was I would have liked a clothesline for wet suits, but a tree outside our door sufficed and no one complained. The conceriege had a significant variety of other places to visit and was most helpful. This is my second time staying here and I will be coming back!

The bungalows are the least expensive place to stay in Akumal but I feel they are overpriced. I will probably rent a condo casita on Half Moon Bay next time we visit. Made entirely of solid concrete - including the beds, couch and bench table. Our unit (204) had only one chair and no free-standing table which made it difficult to enjoy eating or drinking in the room. You would stay here because you are literally steps away from Akumal Bay beach, Lol Ha restaurant and great snorkeling. The breakfast coupon is a good deal - value of $121 pesos daily buys continental breakfast for two or can be applied to anything on the menu, which is quite extensive. You probably would not spend time in the bungalow itself except to sleep, shower and change into beach clothes.

The Staff at VMB were all great, rooms ... clean and pleasant, grounds .. beautiful, beds... not good. Every year we go there they are harder or else our old bodies can tolerate them less ....

Tho we were right behind LoHo restaurant and its entertainment nights, our room was absolutely quiet. No noisy teens, mostly either mature folks or folks with small kids. Beach is great for kids and the snorkeling is excellent. Food is great; awesome variety. Vendors are typical of Mexico and run from street variety to high-end. Perfect location for all activities and the conceriege is marvelous at finding great trips for all ages. This is our third year here; sixth year in Akumal and I look forward to it every year!

We stayed here our first night, after a long travel day, on our way to a week in rented house on the beach in Soliman Bay (sp?). The bungalow was nice but the AC was struggling in the heat (we came in from Seattle so our heat adjustment was harsh coming from the 60's to the 90's w/85% humidity). My only complaint was that we got invaded with these tiny little ants trailing in from everywhere. They got in our bags, the bed, they were even cruising in and out of the keyboard on laptop. I don??t know what they are called but they were tiny, fast, and industrious but harmless and almost invisible. Not sure what they were so interested in us as we didn't have any food in the room. It just comes with the climate, had we stayed for more time I would have asked that they spray or something. Anyway, it??s an awesome beach and the staff is super helpful. If you drive in you may want to get supplies in Playa Del Carmen because the prices at the little store in Akumal are steep.

We have stayed at the Hotel Akumal Caribe many times and it is our favorite place to stay in Akumal, however the hotel was being remodeled so we had to stay in the Villas Maya. We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the room in the Villas Maya. The only downside was they were not directly on the beach. Other than a short walk to the beach they were perfect. Thanks.

The house, beach and location are absolutely incredible. We have been coming to the Riviera for 15 yeaars , have even worked with Kay in the past and this time had the pleasure of working with Scott. He was awesome! Britt (name?) the house manager came twice, gave excellent suggedtions and advice and was much appreciated. The house staff were friendly and cleaned the house well, but I would say they could have been better in their level of attentiveness. They did not clean a passage way on the beach when the seaweed floated up due to winds and rain, so we cleared it with shovels so we could get the kayaks up. They asked for the day after Christmas off instead of Christmas, which was fine with us, but they left in the early afternoon on the 25th and we did not see them until the 27th morning. It would be nice if they could have cleared some of the seaweed etc as the other house staff were doing for the clients. It is not a big deal, but we have stayed at many houses and the house staff have been a bit more attentive. One last point is they started cleaning the house on the morning we left before 11 am (around 10:30) for the next guests. It would have been nice if they had waited for us to exit. We ended up leaving the property with the cars at 11:30. I dont want to give the impression that they were not good, but we thought they could have been better.
People wonder why we always return to the bungalows....because we love it there and the people around us...staff is the best and the lacation perfect....not fancy but it is home to us.....
