Not every top-ranking specialty lodging can boast a laid-back atmosphere, true Mexican hospitality and a prime beach location. El Faro has it all and much-much more…
This Exclusive Hotel is strategically positioned in the center of Playa del Carmen gorgeous beach, just a block away from 5th Ave and a block away from 12th Street. So you don’t have to go far to find the best shops, diving centers, gourmet restaurants, casual bistros and a bustling nightlife.
Besides its great location, El Faro offers its guests the comfort, service and amenities of a five-star resort. This is the reason it has been so popular with honeymooners and groups of friends looking for a worry-free and fun side of Mexico.
Every detail inside El Faro is well thought of, to make sure that you will not need anything while staying there – from stylish interior design to cozy beds, from spacious living room to a well-furnished kitchen, from high-end air conditioning systems to big plasma TV.
And unlike in many other hotels, the pool-side patios (lower level units) and ocean-side terraces (upper level units) are not only used, but highly appreciated by El Faro’s guests. Almost everyone who stays here, opts for breakfast on the balcony and as the sun is setting. Young couples usually take a bottle of wine and enjoy the amazing view, while listening to the top-notch reggae, salsa and jazz bands playing live in the Blue Parrot, Coco Maya restaurants close by.
However, when the balcony doors are closed, any sounds from the street disappear, making sure that you have a good night’s sleep.
Another great feature of the El Faro is its huge beachfront pool that is designed for kids and adults alike. The main part of the pool faces the beach so it’s naturally wonderful to spend hours looking at the views of the horizon while simply lazing around the poolside – or taking cool dips in the pool.Which is the main reason, why most guests spend most of their vacation between El Faro’s pool and the beach… and love every minute of it!

Very nice units. Modern and large. Close to beach. Very close to 5th street and many shops and great restaurants. We had our 2 year old with us and she had a great time too.

Great location, in the heart of it all. Facing the beach and a few steps from the main avenue (5th), which is the heart of Playa del Carmen. Very clean, beautiful condos. Nicely decorated and staff was nice and helpful when needed, but more importantly, they let you alone when you didn't!

Security did an awesome job when I got sick. They called the doctor for me. The kitchen was not adequate for real cooking a meal. They had a toaster oven that was the replacement for the oven but the condo was overall well maintained. The pool was comfortable. Wicky's was not the best food in the area. We enjoyed sitting at the Zenzi bar next door on the beach.

Absolutely loved the condo. It was beautiful... 3 flat screen TVs, nice kitchen, dish washer, air conditioning, amazing view from the deck, fantastic bathroom and showers, everything is top notch... having the underground parking was a huge plus too...
Our only complaints were that some of the features advertised were not actually there. The listing said there was a gym and laundry on premise and there wasn't. The listing also said there was internet in the room (which I needed to check into work), but there was no internet and no phone.

Our family of 3, including our 2-year old boy, wanted a safe, peaceful, private, ocean-front condo with a pool in PDC - and we were very pleased! Super location, just a block up & you're in the heart of 5th Ave., beautiful sandy beach with gentle waves, and a huge pool with shallow areas safe for children. We stayed in Reef 103 (2 bdrm, 2 bath), which is on the south wing of the complex, and really loved the unit. It was modern, had comfy furniture and great hard beds, and the ground floor patio (with a dining set and couch) walked right out to the pool deck - very convenient. We never had problems with security and felt very safe there. The nightclubs people are referring to as being noisy are to the north; our time there was very peaceful and quiet. The kitchen is well-appointed with appliances (incl. d/w) and utensils, but make sure to do your inventory checklist as some of the things listed on it were not there (e.g. missing 1/2 of a set of wine glasses, plates, etc.), though we didn't have any problems come check-out time. We parked our vehicle in the underground of El Faro & never had any problems. The entertainment, front desk and security staff were very pleasant and helpful. The water pressure for showering was weak, as were the toilets, but that's typical in many beachside resorts. Wifi, AC and everything else worked well in the unit (intermittent wifi on the patio). Having in-suite laundry was definitely nice! One minor downside was that the condo smelt a little bit musty and felt a bit damp, probably from long-term, heavy AC use, etc.
Beware of the following: timeshare people on the premises promising you gift certificates, discounts, etc. - you will be sucked in to half a day (theyll tell you its only going to take 1 hour) of being toured and pressured to invest in these condos; check your bill at the restaurant onsite as they tried adding things that weren't supposed to be on our bill, and confirm whether or not tip is included on your bill; general rule for every merchant / restaurant you pay with a credit card - many don't let you see the total they've rung in, and hand you the machine when it's time to punch in your code - we caught so many people trying to add more charges to our bill - press cancel on the machine & tell them you want to see the total on the debit/credit machine before you punch in your code - they'll be upset, but tough!
Overall, we really had a wonderful stay at El Faro, would love to come back and would recommend it!

The property had a great location. Very close to restaurants, shops, ferry to Cozumel. Property was clean both outside and in the condo. The negative things I would say is that when we changed out the water bottle it was filthy and filled with mildew. The refrigerator would move and block the dish washer every time we opened it. The master suite bathroom sink was clogged and the faucet would splash all over you and the sink if you turned it up to high. One of the sliders would not lock. As it became closer to our departure we received less towels. The front desk personnel were not friendly and did nothing to address our issues. I would think if your going to consider yourself an upscale hotel they would address your issues and be a little more friendly. I will say the restaurant was excellent and the staff was exceptional. Other than the front desk staff everyone was friendly and accommodating. Overall I would still recommend this property.

We enjoyed our stay and when we had to move (due to an electrical fire) the staff made arrangements for us in a timely manner. They did not, however, help us with our bags from the 3rd floor (elevator not working). Wicky's beach bar/restaurant apparently owns some of the loungers on the beach so, even though the hotel says you can use the beach loungers, you can only use certain ones.

We spent two weeks at the resort, it was relaxing, with a great beach easy walk from the bus station if you want to save 110 dollars also newsstand, and great street vendor selling fresh squeezed at calle4. Walking distance to everything you don't need a car at El Faro.

We have a great stay at the Encanto El Faro. Some reviews stated issues with the noise and beach, but we didn't have a problem with either. Can't wait to go back. Thank you Loco Gringo!

The El Faro condos are beautiful. Every condo has an unbelievable view of the pool, beach, and ocean. The location (Calle 10 and the beach) is very nice, its close to a lot of restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. The pool is huge (for a condo complex) and is great for lazy days. I assume, however, that there must be a lot of issues with pool and beach chairs and shade umbrellas during high season. We were there in June, and there weren't that many people around, and they ran out of shade umbrellas early every day. We asked the condo staff if they had more and they said no, the condo complex only has so many chairs and umbrellas. Aside from that, we had a great vacation and we would consider staying at El Faro again.

Great for kids, the beach is centrally located.
Loved the facility as a whole. Some minor issues that were addressed immediately.
We plan on staying here again as it provided for a very relaxing family vacation.

As you know, sometimes it can be little inconsistent when you book on-line. Check in was a breeze, there were no surprises with the property. We went with 15 people in four units. Age range was 7-78. Something for everyone. The units didn't come with laundry or dish soap, as well as spices, cooking oils, etc. Something we've come to expect from other condo units. The wifi seemed to only work in the lobby. TV's (for those who need it) were tough to figure out.
Overall, a good experience. Props to Sylvia at the front desk. Very nice, very professional.

As I stated "our best trip yet" we've been coming to PDC for 10 years or so. We've stayed in all-inclusives, villas and a couple different condo villages. We stayed in november with family and a couple friends (16 total) then came back again in March with our company. (42 ppl)
Hands down, Encato El Faro was the overwhelming favorite from all our visits. Why?
1. Location, location, location. Its downtown on the beach. Close to everything, but far enough away to not feel in town.
2. The staff: from the loco gringo staff (Natalia and Katie) to the condo staff (Sylvia was amazing) everyone you encounter is friendly and helpful.
3. The units themselves are very modern and beautiful. Each bedroom had a plasma TV, the beds were extremely comfortable.
4. Wicky's might be a little too expensive to eat and drink at on a daily basis, but each time we did eat there, we were very happy with the food and great service ( this means a lot coming from us, as we're all restaurateurs) the Chef at Wicky's is awesome.
The only negative really was the condo units come completely bare: no spices, olive oil, etc that you may find in other condo units. Not a big thing at all, though!

I found this resort to be exquisite. I could not have carved out a better vacation for myself. It is extremely clean. I can't say enough great things about the staff (who can't do enough for you) but to name a few memorable people... Sylvia at the front desk was always very helpful, Pasquale at Wicky's treated me like a queen, Chris served us quite often as well and he was super. Hermundo served us at the pool and he never stopped smiling (very infectious), Patrezia at the beach bar worked extremely hard and was always so pleasant. So many others as well made this vacation perfect for us. The rooms are very spacious and clean. I do not have one bad comment about this resort other than we had to leave. We are hoping to return next year. We have been to many destinations over the years but this one so far is our favourite.

Probably the best place in Playa. Reasonably priced for what you get. Close to stores and transportation. Great beach location, some hotels don't have sand on the beach (picture rocks and a bunch of plastic sacks filled with sand or few feet of sand between the hotel and the water), some have a bunch of fishing boats as a view (locals have to make a living too, some are fishermen and the beach is federal property). This place has a nice beach and a nice pool. You get a full kitchen, W&D, and Grill in some of the units. It is nice to be able to bring your own drinks to the pool and the beach and at the same time be able to order from the bar if you are craving a piña colada. We save a bunch of money by eating in and bringing our own drinks. We buy groceries and drinks for a whole week, [@] is really close by.

Beautifully maintained property, pool area always clean. Wicky's Restaurant next door is convenient for breakfast and lunch, we always walk up to 5th Avenue to one of our favorite spots The Glass Door or Sur Parilla.
Beach has bee eroded since our last visit. Great sunrises.

As far as location (on the beach) and pool for the kids, El Faro is perfect. We also love the Downtown location of El Faro. Literally, anything you'd need is within 4 blocks, but mostly within 2.
We LOVE El Faro. We started bringing our Managers and spouses to Playa 11 years ago and did some "condo / Villa hopping" We're most likely going to settle on El Faro for quite some time. The location is seriously second to none. One block to 5th; the Beachfront and water are perfect for swimming, laying out, people-watching. The service at Wicky's is that of a 5-star resort in the States. We have now stayed there five seperate times in the past 2 1/2 years. Great for large groups and families. The pool is ideal for kids. BUT PLEASE, don't tell amyone about El Faro!!!:)
Two minor negatives: If you get a jacuzzi, don't expect warm or hot water in it. And some of the Master suites don't have doors leading to their bathrooms, which could be an issue if you get montezuma's revenge!
By: John Gosnell
We had a nice stay at El Faro, our unit was clean well furnished. The property was well cared for during our visit. It has a nice central location to all Playa has to offer. The hot tub in the unit is no longer functional, this should be noted to those renting the unit before they arrive.
By: Heidi Gilbert
We enjoyed the complex a lot. Very clean place with a great pool. The beds were super comfortable and each room had its own A.C. The only negatives were; 1) our sliding glass door locked us out on the patio a couple of times, and 2) the rooftop terrace didn't have much to offer . . . the Jacuzzi tub was broken (we knew in advance), they didn't have a BBQ, and it had a high wall around it. That being said, we recommend it, but maybe not 403.
By: Mark Grennan
Great location and very nice condos. Even had satellite tv. Only downside was that one of the sliding glass doors would not lock and we were in an ocean front condo where anyone could walk on our patio.

We''ve stayed with and without our kids at el faro 3 times now spanning 5 years. This most recent visit illustrated to us the aging process and lack of upkeep. I would guess the facility is 7 years or so old, and is nearing individual renovation time based on what I''ve seen staying in 3 separate ground floor units (and I''m sure these are the heaviest used). The housekeepers do a fairly good job doing the weekly cleaning, but a periodic deep clean, paint touch up, and handyman visits would enhance things greatly. Our most recent visit showed a wearing down couch (which also smelled bad), noisy and hard to operate doors out of adjustment, appliances showing definite wear, and beds showing DEFINITE wear and use. That sort of thing. The biggest gripe I had after this visit was the pool though, the main and only amenity in the common area. Hundreds of missing tiles, lights inoperable, and circulation pump completely inoperable as well. What this means is you have an unsafe and mostly stagnant body of water with dozens of people using it non stop. In the United States it would be illegal to operate this way. I questioned the front desk about it and the pool guy said they currently didn''t even have a pump. They did net out debris and throw granulated chlorine in, and once during our visit they brought a mobile pump in to vacuum, but this is unacceptable at a popular and high class facility like el faro. By the day we left there was a layer of oil film on the surface and I kept my kids out of the pool completely. Mexico, and el faro, you just simply can''t let the maintenance slide on things like this. We the customer can spend a fraction and stay someplace else that''s not as fancy but better maintained. Will we be back? Probably. Will the maintenance continue to slide? Yep.
