Loco Gringo Staff

Someone asked us the other day why we thought Loco Gringo has weathered the storm of online vacation booking. With large corporate vacation rental websites taking over the travel industry, this Akumal visitor was curious how a midsized agency like Loco Gringo could continue to compete with the Big Guys (those were their exact words). Real People Plan Your Vacation In the world of automatic responses and fast results, it seems odd that a real person on the other end of the phone can make a...

Our dream has come true. The cities of Playa del Carmen and Merida have free WIFI in major parks, squares, residential communities and tourist attractions. The new WIFI falls under the Federal program 'Mexico Conectado', with Merida building its own information website 'Merida - Cuidad Digital - Parques En Linea'. As of March 1, 2015 Playa del Carmen has 25 public spaces with free WIFI and Merida has 125 public spaces with free WIFI. Bottom line for visitors - it is easy to stay in touch...

Interview with a Local - Gessie from Riviera Maya Groceries

We love the people who live in our little pueblo of Akumal, Gessie from Riviera Maya Groceries being one of those special locals. Gessie is fun, loves the area and has been a good friend over the years. I love her perspective and thought you would as well. What, in your opinion, makes this part of Mexico unique and worth visiting? This part of Mexico has a lot to offer! Every place in this area is unique, even if at first sight it seems all the same; beautiful ocean and beaches, really nice...

We feel lucky that new activities and cultural events pop up throughout the year along the coast. Someone asked us the other day 'What's new in the Riviera Maya'. After sharing this information we decided to post the answer for all of our readers and visitors. I mean, who wouldn't like to know the latest and greatest things to do in the Riviera Maya? La Joya - Cirque de Soleil Show This was probably one of the most anticipated openings of the year. The soft opening was in November and the...

Train Travel in the Riviera Maya

So there are some very mixed feelings about the new proposed 'Rapid Train' between Playa del Carmen and Merida that will stop at Valladolid, Chichen Itza and Tulum. The 'Transpeninsular Train' would travel at 110 kms per hour and carry up to 400 passengers, and will travel through the Yucatan jungle. Some people love the idea, others are opposed. With change comes two sides to every story, and we have that story. Benefits of the New Transpeninsular Train in the Riviera Maya and...

Highway from Playa del Carmen to Holbox

Now this is exciting! A new highway has opened up in Playa del Carmen and takes you to Nuevo Xcan, a small pueblo that is the gateway to Isla Holbox. A 2.5 hour drive from Playa to Isla Holbox has just been cut to an hour! This new highway also decreased the drive time to Merida and Valladolid by 40%. What was close to a full day trip is now a possible half day trip, depending on your intentions. Old Route to Isla Holbox from the Riviera Maya Coast In the old day, we traveled south from Playa...

Allow Us to Introduce You To Dr. Bernardo Diaz of Playa del Carmen! When we need a doctor, Dr. Bernardo is the guy we call.  Why?  One he speaks English, two, he makes house calls!   Something unheard of in the modern age.  Not only does he make house calls, if he needs blood drawn the phlebotomist (the guy who draws blood) can come too. No need to go to the office.  But Dr. B has an office near the Royal Resort in Playa del Carmen. Bedside manners: he's funny as hell, yet still...
