isla-mujeres-riviera-maya-photo-of-the-day-in-mexico-sunset

Isla Mujeres is just north of Cancun. Take a quick ferry ride to the Island of Women and enjoy a Caribbean feel, great beaches, and our favorite, the sunsets. Isla Mujeres is technically outside of the Riviera Maya, but we still love this vacation destination in Mexico. THe island is small, 2 kms in diameter and 8 kms long. Golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation but cars are allowed on the island. Isla Mujeres has a pedestrian avenue similar to that found in Playa del Carmen but it...

Isla HOlbox in the town of HOlbox, featured buildings and sand roads

Isla Holbox (pronounced Hole-bosh) is just north of Cancun in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. The history of this island is colorful, and it has been through more bosses of the island than we would like to mention. Isla Holbox has one boss today, and that is the Whaleshark, the largest fish in the sea that migrates from Honduras to the Gulf of Mexico during the summer months. Isla Holbox is a personal favorite and we love the whalesharks as well. Combined I would say...

mayan pole dance in Playa del Carmen

In the heart of Playa del Carmen, the Mayan pole dancers have been given a spot in the central zocalo, Parques Fundadores, to show off the famous Mayan pole dance. This Dance is called Danza de los Voladores (Dance of the Flyers), or Palo Volador (Pole Flying) and is a ritual performed by Mayans in both Mexico and Guatemala. Thankfully, the dance of the flyers can be seen each hour in the center of Playa del Carmen or at the entrance to the Tulum ruins. This ceremony was said to be used to...

Riviera Maya photo of the day – a family vacation destination

Posted April 17, 2013 by Kay Walten in Riviera Maya Destinations,Riviera Maya Photos

family vacations are popular in the Riviera maya

When people think of the Riviera Maya, Cancun, Playa del Carmen or even Tulum, spring break parties seem to come to mind. Well let this photo of the Riviera Maya debunk all of those thoughts as you see families on the beach and not the college students (or adults) looking for a good time. Mexico as a culture is very family focused. As more workers are needed in the Riviera Maya to support the many businesses along the coast, families are the center of attention in most Riviera Maya...

Cenote Cristalino entrance and store near Tulum mexico

This photo was taken at Centoe Cristalino just north of Tulum. It is pictures like these that warm our hearts and give us a big smile when we are in Mexico. The store is at the entrance to the cenote, a fresh water natural sink hole where families and friends go to swim on our hot Riviera Maya days. What we love is the hand painted signs all over the exterior of the store welcoming everyone to this magical place. 'The cenote is a marvelous location to be enjoyed by everyone in the family'...

This Akumal beach photo in the Riviera Maya was taken on a Monday morning as we welcomed a new week. At this point we are not sure how else to welcome in the week. If you were on vacation in the Riviera Maya, you would be joining us in welcoming a Monday morning just like this. This a great candid shot taken in Akumal at the entrance to the Yal ku lagoon. The lagoon is super famous in Akumal and throughout the coast of the Riviera Maya.

This a great candid shot taken in Akumal at the entrance to the Yal ku lagoon. The lagoon is super famous in Akumal and throughout the coast of the Riviera Maya. For new snorkelers, the lagoon offers a safe, shallow area to try snorkeling. The water is a mix of fresh and salt water so the experience is unlike other snorkeling adventures. For experience snorkelers, the variety of fish that can be seen in the lagoon is amazing! Fish migrate in and out of the lagoon making this a haven for the sea...
