Riviera Maya Photo of the Day – Puerto Morelos Beach Bar

Posted May 16, 2013 by Kay Walten in Riviera Maya Destinations,Riviera Maya Photos

Could this be the world's tiniest beach bar? Or is the Puerto Morelos beach so long and wide everything on it seems small? Either way, this is one of our favorite beaches because it is never too crowded and it has everything from restaurants, to bars to massage without seeming too commercial. Check out some of vacation rentals near this fabulous beach!

Tulum photo of the day – Buy local at Tulum fruit markets

Brooklyn construction in new York City is a free stock photo that can be downloaded now. This free photo shows the slow building of skyscrapers

We are great supporters of buying local. The produce and fruits we find at the local fruit markets are so sweet, so delicious and so fresh, why would we buy from large grocery stores? Tulum fruit stands are worthy of special mention as they do have tropical fruits that can not be found in Playa del Carmen, or other local village stores. Tulum is a fruit hub where fruits come in from the east (Yucatan) and the south. Step into a roadside fruit stand in Tulum and buy some of their local produce...

Riviera Maya Photo of the Day – Living Life on the Edge

our life in the riviera Maya

Several years ago, when I told my friends and family I was moving to Riviera Maya, Mexico they all said I was crazy. What will you do down there? How will you manage by yourself? Aren't people trying to leave Mexico? Though their hearts were in the right place, their questions reflected doubt and discouragement. It seems like a lifetime ago when I packed up my truck and rode the last operating Yucatan Express ferry over. When to everyone's surprise (even my own) I had carried through with my...

horchata in the riviera maya - local gluten free drink

We talk about drinking coconuts all the time for hydration and over well-being, but this local drink rocks it! For those on a gluten-free diet, this could become your next drink of choice. Horchata is a cold rice based drink that is flavored with cinnamon and vanilla. Rice is soaked to create a milk like liquid (think rice milk) and blended with vanilla, cinnamon and  a sweeter. If you are thirsty, this is a great thirst quencher. If you are looking for a local, cheap, delicious drink, this is...

Riviera Maya photo of the day – hidden beach and secret beach

xcacel hidden beach in the riviera maya

When you live in the Riviera Maya you have the opportunity to find hidden beaches, secret beaches and off the beaten path beaches. One of our favorites has been Xcacel just south of Akumal. This beach is a turtle sanctuary that has been tagging, studying and watching the turtles of the Riviera Maya for decades. It is a great beach to go to and a great beach to swim at. Xcacel does not have a restaurant, or beach chairs or any amenities. If it had all of that, it would not be hidden or a...

Yucatan photo – loving Mexico’s rich history

history of mexico and the cristeros

Living in Mexico and the Riviera Maya has taught us a lot about the history of this country. There is much more than meets the eye and we love to share Mexican history that is not well-known. This photo is a photo of the Mexican Cristeros. After the Mexican Revolution in the early 1900's the President at the time tried to ban the Catholic church in Mexico. The outcry was historical, with Mexicans defeating this decision of the federal government in the late 1920's. The local armies that fought...

Yucatan photo of the day – A great off the beaten track road

road in the Yucatan mexico

One of our favorite things to do in the Riviera Maya or the Yucatan is to take a road less traveled and find out where it leads. This game is not for everyone but we have found some pretty interesting things when we take a left, because. Cool thing is, you can benefit from our 'take a left here' adventures. We write about most of these adventures or share our discoveries with readers. Sure it takes a bit of the adventure out of the 'turn left here' ritual, but it saves a bit of time. This...

Tulum Photo of the day – reading a book and chilling

Reading a book on the tulum beach in the riviera Maya

Is there anything more blissful than having a one book day.  Is there anything more blissful than a one book day, on the beach, under a palapa, sipping a margarita? This photo was taken in Tulum. It WAS a one book day, and it was a blissful day. As a paper book reader still (digital books are not as luxurious) there is nothing better than a quiet day on the Tulum beach reading a great book. A walk can be taken in between chapters, on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Few people...
