Have you been to Puerto Morelos in the Riviera Maya? Have you experienced this small village located 15 minutes south of the Cancun Airport and just 20 minutes north of Playa del Carmen? If not, let us give you four good reasons to check this little village out on either a day trip or an entire week stay. Just be careful you may not want to leave.
The Caribbean Sea within the city limits of Puerto Morelos are a protected marine park. You can snorkel and you can dive the second largest barrier reef in the world. You can even snorkel from shore and check out the local sealife. The community loves the sea and wanted to make sure there were sustainable rules to protect their marine ecosystem for generations to come. Once you get in the water and start to explore, you will see that their strategy is working.
There are cute little beachside restaurants that are family owned and operated. By checking out these little treasures you will be supporting local families, but you will also have some of the best ceviche, fried fish, and seafood cocktails money can buy. Corporate beach clubs are not the name of the game here, and we love the old school vibe these family restaurants bring to the beach.
Puerto Morelos is a community. Friends, families, and visitors love going to the town square every evening to see the artists market (five nights a week) and the Saturday night show produced by local gymnasts, circus clowns, illusionists, and cirque de soleil type acts. The Saturday evening show begins around 7 pm. It runs for 90 minutes or more and engages the entity community in its show. It makes for a great night out or you can sit at La Sirena or Punta Corcha with dinner or a cocktail and see the show from the second floor.
It is fun. It is friendly. People say hello to each other on the street. The beach is glorious, restaurants are great. This is old school, old town living in the Riviera Maya just a few minutes away from the large cities of Cancun and Playa del Carmen. It is a magical town that produces magical things, but you need to experience it to believe it.
