While luxury chain hotels are definitely comfortable, there are a few things that family-owned boutique hotels always beat them at. One is the authentic hospitality that makes you feel like you’re part of the family. Another is an unmistakable personality, rooted in the unique history of the place.
Hotel Casa San Angel has it all – tasteful elegance, genuine hospitality, rich history and amazing location in the center of Merida’s historical district.
Situated on a small quiet street right at the end of the famous Paseo Montejo, Hotel Casa San Angel is just a short walk to the central plaza and best city sights.
Originally the home of the famous Mexican mathematician and astronomer, ”Maestro” Graciano Ricalde, Hotel Casa San Angel is whimsical and welcoming.
It’s hard to step inside and not raise your head in awe. The magnificent garden courtyard reveals beautiful hand-painted murals. The lush vines wrap around classical colonial columns and reach up to the courtyard balconies. The sounds of the fountain and the cheerful calls of parrots – all come together to create a magical atmosphere of surprising serenity and sophisticated chic, that you’d never expect to find in the city.
Walking inside, you’ll find a tastefully-decorated restaurant and a charming gift shop, featuring a wide selection of local hand crafted objects. The food prepared by the Tala Bistro restaurant is delicious, but you absolutely must try their coffee. Many say that it is the best coffee they have tasted in Merida and all of Mexico.
The stylish air-conditioned rooms of this boutique hotel are a treat for your eyes and your body. Each room is uniquely-designed, but all feature comfortable beds, indoor hammocks, 32” flat screen Cable TVs, free Wi-Fi internet and en-suite bathrooms with high-quality amenities.
It’s truly a pleasure to return here after a long day of exploring the Merida’s cathedrals, shops and art galleries, throw yourself on the bed and enjoy the refreshing coolness of the room.

This hotel was absolutely wonderful. We found a small house in the historic area of Merida that was also wonderful and had full kitchen and wading pool that was about $50/nite cheaper than this hotel. But if you want a hotel experience, this is the one I would recommend.
