Those, who have loved a stay in Akumal Beach Resort, will be happy to know that it has gotten bigger and better without losing its family-oriented, locally-owned charm. Called Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort, this, now 5-star hotel boasts 324 beautifully-decorated ocean front suites and superb beach location in Akumal.
Known for its white powdery beaches, and rich marine life Akumal Bay remains one of the best places for snorkeling right off the shore. In fact, there is a coral reef within a marine conservation area that teems with shimmering schools of tropical fish just a few feet from the resort.
Large sea turtles also love this beautiful and tranquil beach for nesting. So it’s not unusual to see them laying their eggs in the sand or witnessing baby turtles making their way towards the sea during the hatching season.
Making the maximum out of its great beach location and the natural beauty of the place, all junior suites at the Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort are designed with large private terraces or balconies, overlooking the Caribbean.
Each suite comes with a king-size bed (or 2 doubles), Wi-Fi internet, cable TV, a safe deposit box, a minibar, and a coffee maker. Each suite also boasts a private jacuzzi and a good-size sitting area.
Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort has 3 pools (including a kid’s pool), a buffet restaurant, a snack bar, a sushi bar, and 4 specialty a la carte restaurants, featuring a wide variety of Mexican, Oriental and American dishes for vegetarians and meat-lovers. Should you want to eat out, many of Akumal’s local bars and restaurants are within walking distance from the resort.
Built around the idea of a relaxing family vacation, Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort offers organized daily activities and sports, an entertainment program, snorkeling tours, a kid’s club and, as the name suggests, a wellness center and a spa.
Note: Akumal Beach Resort has been closed since September 1st, 2014 for the renovations. Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort is scheduled to open early for this winter season. Absolutely loved the Akumal Beach Resort. This is not a five-star glitzy huge resort, but it is smaller, family orientated and on a drop dead beautiful beach. One does not come here for glitz, but one comes for the natural beauty, snorkling with turtles, safe ocean swimming, etc. I absolutely will come back! Cheers,

We hope Akumal Bay doesn't become loved to death.

This was our second trip to ABR and of course we loved it. We went for snorkeling and the location and were not disappointed. We met old friends and met a few new ones as well. We will be back next year as our son is getting married at the resort. The only disappointment will be the new resort going next door. We like ABR for the quiet laid back atmosphere and I, like a lot of others feel we might lose that setting. But we will continue to enjoy it while we can.

This was our 6th time staying at Akumal Beach Resort. Everything was good as expected. Good food. Good friends. Good fun.

Having stayed at ABR many times I consider it to be my home away from home and come to know many of the staff and management. They always treat me just like family and make my stays a great experience. I was sorry to see old beach bar and area all torn down trip as there where many good times spent there with good friends.

We have stayed at Akumal Beach Resort four times now, and love the staff and location. The food could have more effort put into it, oftentimes there was little or no seasoning, and the ala carte offerings were fairly bland as well. The beds need to be upgraded to something that does not require a pad to sleep on it. WiFi is not free, and it is inconvenient in that you have to be within a small area near the lobby to pick up the wifi and the service is slow. Ceiling fans in the restaurants and gathering areas would help alleviate the mosquito problem. The shows were amazing and could use more effort on the part of the management to provide the entertainment staff with a budget and staffing to provide even greater shows. Other than that, we loved our ten day stay even with the rain.

When we arrived, the front desk staff had our arrival date wrong. It took a while to work it out and get a room assignment. On our second day we found the pool was to be closed for several days for cleaning and refinishing. The food at the buffet was adequate. A few of the palapas were roped off, presumably needing maintenance. The air conditioning in our room in building 6 was barely adequate. The bed was rock hard, which is not that unusual in Mexico. Overall, I'd say the resort was OK, nothing more. The location is top notch!

I beautiful and relaxed FAMILY vacation. Perfect location and family environment. Snorkeling from the beach. Easy to entertain children without driving everywhere.

We have stayed at ABR 7 times, so obviously, we like it. The rooms are large and comfortable, the staff is friendly and helpful, the beach is beautiful with a reef providing a breakwater which allows good snorkeling with turtles (Akumal means place of turtles in Yucatec Mayan), as well as stingrays and fish. Due to the incursion of lion fish, the local fish were scarce during our visit, but we did see turtles and a large, beautiful stingray. Anyone expecting luxury would be disappointed. It is a small resort which should stay small. There are signs of a large expansion which is disconcerting -- I'm afraid that the Bay will be overwhelmed and the turtles could disappear. The bar service is good, but the food is disappointing. Breakfast is the best meal. We were puzzled as to why the hot food is always lukewarm unless you have something cooked to order, such as morning eggs, etc. The quantity of food is good, but the quality leaves something to be desired. However, it is a one-of-a-kind resort that feels like Mexico, as opposed to many of the large 5-Star resorts which could be anywhere.

My granddaughter slipped on wet tile the first night and sprained her angle. The resort provided a wheelchair and was very concerned about her. We had a good time even though we were not able to swim with the Turtles.

FUN. RELAXING. SATISFACTORY FOR AGES 8 months to 61 years. Our first full family vacation. Good food. Very friendly staff. Quiet rooms. Closets a little musty but what the hech the beach front view was sooooooo worth it. Weather was perfect. Who arranged that for us. Cancun Valet service outstanding.

This was our eighth visit to Akumal Beach Resort, so we knew what to expect. We were also aware of the recent changes in the resort property. The staff and beach are always the high points of our visits. We also were very pleased with the improvement in the variety of foods being offered. We would love to see the improvements continue in the rehab of the rooms in Building 4. Of concern were the very large number of snorkel tours being done. The sheer number of people being crowded into the now smaller end of the resort was disruptive to the serenity that we wanted.

We spent four nights/five days at ABR. This is the first time we stay at ABR. We've stayed in Akumal a few other times but our first time here. The all-inclusive is nice, especially with teenagers. The food was very good, especially the omelets at breakfast. The location is great and as always the snorkeling was amazing. We saw lots of beautiful fish, sea turtles and stingray. We've been vacationing in Mexico since the 80's and this is our favorite location. Never disappointed. Can't wait to go back.

The only bad part was the heavy machinery next to ABR - too noisy. And I hate to think what it will be like when the new resort is finished. Think it will be time to move on.

on the whole satisfactory. Food repetitive

This is our second trip to this property. I would recommend this property but only based on location, it is the picture of paradise from my perspective. We are quiet people who are looking for a true vacation. No cooking, no cleaning plenty of things to do. My wife and I honeymooned at ABR 10 years ago and the biggest change was the entertainment and staff at ABR. Entertainment is almost non existant at this resort. The entertainment staff used to be so fun and involved. They used to make everyone want to participate and the shows in the theater were small but again fun. Missed all of that this time. Was same group singing oldies or Karaoke this time around. Not our type of entertainment sadly. The area could not be more beautiful though. We were Open Water Dive Certified at the Akumal Dive Shop! The staff there are AMAZING! It is located just up the beach along with night life, food and vendors. You could be tempted to just lounge and soak up the beauty but a trip up the white sandy beach does provide a more active environment (NOT PART OF ABR). ABR property is clean and well maintained. Miss the staff from our first trip, so friendly and always with a warm, genuine smile. Good for quiet escape to paradise. Definately bring your storel and flips!!! If you haven't tried it, do it!

We have stayed at AKB four times and this was the first time we had some disappointments. Bed was terrible - slept on box springs poking our backs..... and the dinner buffet each evening was not only boring, but tasteless. We are not fussy eaters, but we were surprised by this as previous stays we had no complaints. This is a very pretty resort, and we would like to see it stay that way

Our fourth stay at the resort with our 3 young children and our own parents. Feels like home every time we set foot in the lobby. Only reason for the 3 star on general condition is it is obvious that changes were to be happening with the upcoming renovations. Otherwise, the resort has always given us the most amazing vaction for those who enjoy a laid back vibe with picture perfect views with each and every step. We will be back to see the new resort. Hopefully the upgrades will not lose the character of the hotel which is what has drawn us back so many times.

After 5 stays at Akumal Beach Resort we pretty much know what to expect. The location is awesome, the food is average with plenty of selection. The staff is great, going back is like visiting family. The property is being renovated so we are curious to see how well the changes are implemented and what the increase in daily cost will be.

Like some of the other reviews, you go to this Resort for the beach and the location. The Resort is tired. The food was not impressive and there was a lack of restaurants. The beach and pool are very nice.

Location is great everything else is fine and a good value.
The resort is beautiful, the rooms and clean and comfortable and while the beds are in need of replacing we still got a great nights sleep, the staff are absolutely the best anywhere, the food is delicious, the beach is amazing, everything was perfect.

We were welcomed with a beautiful drink with a flower in it. Because Loco Gringo does an excellent job of communication with Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort, our handicap room was ready on the first floor. We were given a tour on the way to our building, our luggage arrived as we did.The room was simple elegance, we could open our door and hear the ocean. The food was the best we have experienced in an all-inclusive meal . The staff asked frequently all day to see if our needs were being met, my only negative is the construction was still going on, they did try to move it to different buildings but was in the background most days, The sand was well groomed. Top notch Life Guards who watched me carefully with my oxygen needs. We hope to return someday to return and stay longer!

We just returned from 10 great days in Mexico. This resort has excellent service and they are constantly cleaning the grounds. I would say my biggest complaint would be the number of beach chairs available. No chairs around the pool was rather annoying also. We witnessed people putting beach towels on chairs at 10:15 pm for the following morning. Our own towels were moved by a couple down from the area where we had put them out. We went ahead and moved them back to our original chairs and they were very upset. The worst part about that was they never came out to use the chairs they had saved. On several other occasions towels were placed very early in the morning and when we left the beach late in the day no one had used those chairs all day. There needs to be some way to control the problem because by 8:00 am you could not find a beach chair anywhere. Our room developed mold while we were there and I had stopped by front desk and let them know but no one did anything about it. Later in the day when we returned to our room we found a major flood and had to be moved. We had a walkout room and was told there were no more available and would have to move to upper floor which I was not happy about. Front desk came by and let us move to room next door and changed people checking in. Really appreciated that even though a little inconvenience for moving. Overall a great place to stay and we have been traveling to Mexico for over 20 years. Would return here again. Check in and out was a breeze.

My husband and I have been together for 10 years. We have vacationed every year to Canada with our children. Many wonderful family memories were made and since this was our 10 year anniversary I decided that we should take a "Mom and Dad" trip. Our relatives have vacationed to Mexico every year and I have drooled at the chance to go. They have walked by this resort and always wanted the chance to stay there. This past year the resort had a complete remodel so we took up the chance to stay. We booked our trip through Loco Gringo. From the beginning of our trip the service was outstanding. All the rooms came with an ocean view which was spectacular! Every morning I would grab my cup of coffee, go out on the patio (which all rooms come with a jacuzzi tub on the patio), and watch the beautiful sunrise. The rooms were stocked and cleaned daily, had great storage, came with a safe and wonderful accommodations. The whole resorts staff was very friendly. Every time you walked by a staff member, no matter what they did, they would greet you. From the check in to check out was top notch. My husband and I enjoyed the wonderful food, drinks and relaxation. We are already planning our next trip and you should be thinking of going on yours right now ;)

Beautiful clear water , coral reef, amazing foods served, excellent waiters and waitresses, always polite and wearing a smile...Clean rooms, water pressure a little difficult as it was either very hot or very cold. Stayed during construction so at times a bit noisy We didn''t mind as we spent most of our time snorkeling We would love to return and would probably request to be in the quieter area All in all, it was a worthy investment for our vacation

This was our 7th stay and we still love it. Even more so with the remodel. The beds and pillows were so comfortable. The tub on the balcony was used, one day we stayed in our room most of the day, filled it cool water and relaxed on the balcony. Nice to have a refridge to keep water cold. We had a lovely stay and would recommend this resort to anyone!
After visiting ABR for the past 4 years we were very excited to see the new ABR. I honestly didn''t think they would pull it off in time but they proved me wrong. The place looks spectacular compared to the past. The rooms have been totally updated and the addition of the new facilities is a vast improvement. That being said we never went here for that reason. It is the people, snorkeling and the beach that is the attraction here. We would have been happy with a few minor improvements.

We stayed at the resort for 1 week in early March. The resort is very clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. We requested to stay in building 3 and on an upper level floor - and we got an ideal room! The cabanas by the pool are amazing!!! Also, the snorkeling is wonderful in that area. There was water aerobics twice a day, which was really nice. The spa and gym were not open yet, so I can''t comment on them. As far as the food goes, it was about what you can expect for an all-inclusive resort. Not gourmet, but pretty good. This is a great place for those who want to snorkel or relax by the pool. If you want a pristine beach, exciting nightlife, high-end shopping, or gourmet meals - this is not the place for you. For me it was ideal though!
