Life’s simple pleasures don’t have to come with a huge price tag – and that’s the beauty of planning your vacation in Riviera Maya. Boasting the surreally azure waters of the Caribbean, white sandy beaches fringed with coconut palms and beach palapas, Half Moon Bay has still managed to preserve its low-key appeal.
The comfortable beachfront condos and budget-friendly casitas have been attracting families with children, couples looking for a romantic getaway and snorkelers and divers alike.
Playa Caribe Casitas is a great example of ‘nice vacation rentals on a budget’. Located at the entrance of the Playa Caribe Condominiums, these three apartments are just a short walk from the beach, yet far enough from the main road for guests to enjoy peace and quiet.
Each casita is air-conditioned and offers all the comforts of a beach house, including some serious advantages over many of the same-price-range properties of Akumal.
One such benefit is the spacious and well-planned layout. Another is the convenience of having your own fully-equipped kitchen and being able to stay in and prepare your own meals. In fact, quite a few guests staying at Playa Caribe Casitas comment that cookware and utensils are actually better than the ones they use at home. The same is true for the beds.
A good night’s sleep is an important part of a relaxing and restful vacation, and therefore, shouldn’t be underestimated. The Casitas Maria and Annette are essentially very similar. Both feature two double beds, a cozy off-set dining area, a private bathroom, satellite TV and plenty of closet space (which provides a great excuse to pack a few extra outfits).
While the casitas/bungalows offer no ocean view, they are just steps from Half Moon Bay and the Playa Caribe Condominiums’ swimming pool. So nothing will stop you from chilling on the beach while lounging under a palapa, watching the sea turtles come up for air just few feet away.
If you feel like exploring Half Moon Bay’s rich marine life, go snorkeling! Just make sure that you take water shoes, as the water entry is rocky. Another great snorkeling spot is just a few minute drive away, at Yal-Ku lagoon. Central Akumal’s dive shops, restaurants, grocery stores and beach barsare near by.

We arrived late at night and the lights and TV were on in our room welcoming us! We felt very safe and at home. The property was fairly small and very well maintained. The staff was there everyday and very helpful with day trip ideas. Will stay there again and have recommened it to our friends as a great place to go.

Perfect location right next to La Buena Vida but still very quiet, calm and relaxing. Short 10 min. walk to town. Clean and fully appointed with everything you need in a kitchen. Even provided with a cooler. Well taken care of, clean and you can tell that the owners and management care a great deal about the property and have pride in keeping it nice.
Will stay again when we return to Akumal.

Our condo had the bigger and more accessible closet locked and unavailable. We felt the owners should have taken the (slightly) smaller closet. We had to use the smaller closet & it was harder to get to because of the furniture.

Playa Caribe Casitas is a wonderful place to stay while you visit the Rivera Maya. We have been going to Akumal for the last 12 years and this was our first time at the Casitas. We really enjoyed our stay. Everything was perfect. The only thing we didn't like so much was the fact that you have to keep the air conditioner running all the time because there's only a small window in the bathroom (and the door, of course)to allow fresh air coming into the room. And we are not big fans of air conditioning! But this was not something that spoiled our stay in any way whatsoever.

Casita Maria at Playa Caribe was a great place to stay. The Casita was nice and cozy, we practically had the whole building to ourselves. The staff was great, was very helpful. Added bonus, you can drink the tap water!!I would suggest water shoes for Half Moon Bay, it's a bit rocky. All in all a great place to stay.

My 18 year old son and I stayed in Casita Maria. It was very well appointed thanks to the owners (fantastic job whomever you are!?). After staying 5 days in the beautiful Blue Sky hotel at Tankah Bay with no tv, my son was ecstatic when he saw the big screen tv with Dish Network and all the DVD's. Apparently, the quick walk around the corner to the beautiful beach wasn't as important to him as it was to me. LOL! We enjoyed a 4 day stay there despite the rain. You can still snorkel in Yakul Lagoon just down the road.

My second stay was just as perfect as the first. Casita Maria is a wondrful guiet location, yet close to all the action. The staff take very good care and are friendly and helpful. If you want to stay in and cook, the kitchen is well equipped. The beds are so comfortable! My favorite, of course, was laying in the loungers on the beach watching the tortugas come up for air just feet away! Oh, and don't forget the pool! Beautiful everywhere you look~

We spent a week at Playa Caribe in Casita Natasha at the beginning of February and returned for 2 days in Casita Maria later in the month. We were concerned when we first booked because we understood it faced the street (very slow moving traffic) and the parking lot (in reality just four car spaces with space between cars and doors). The actual setting was wonderful - very tranquil. We would have liked to gaze at the ocean at night but otherwise didn't miss the ocean view. The rooms were well set up. The staff and their level of care of the property were impressive. We enjoyed having the little pool for the kids and being on the Bay. We took turns snorkelling and even while waiting could watch sea turtles pop their heads up very close to shore. It would have been nice to have had a place to hang clothes as we found we couldn't get anything dry in the rooms. I also missed having a screen on Casita Maria's bathroom window. I also noted that each room should have a broom - children are not the neatest eaters!

this casitas are perfect for a small family.. before arriving we were concerned by the side street discription but in reality they are just at the road side of the condos rather than beach side.. no noise from the road and a small patio table and chairs to sit at when the kids were asleep or for breakfast and lunch. we like to self cater for breakfast and lunch and the kitchen is well equipt.. great if you cant splash out for a condo. the room isnt huge and the only light comes from the kitchen door/window but when we were indoors we just left the kitchen door open. beautiful spot on half moon bay.. easy walk with the kids to lots of great restaurants and walk or drive down to Akumal main bay for snorkelling with the turtles. Akumal main beach is better for the kids too but they enjoyed hopping down there in the car each day it wasnt a problem.

It was a great experience and I would definatley go back. It was very nice and had a GREAT location right by the beach. It was a short drive away from several attractions. Wonderful! I would reccomend it to anyone going to Akumal.

We have stayed at Playa Caribe Casitas FIVE times ...the care of the beach has declined with each visit, especially in comparison with other properties up and down Half Moon Bay. No efforts are made to "rake or clean" the beach, whereas other operators do so ...this makes the immediate beach area in front of Playa Caribe much less enjoyable ...BTW, this was a non-issue during our first three visits. Housekeeping is A-OK, casitas are in very good condition.

This place was wonderful. We opted for the lower cost studio so that we could stay longer. We spent our time at the beach and ruins etc. If you are not planning on doing that sort of stuff, you will want a bigger condo with a view and amenities. This was utilitarian in a great location. The snorkeling off our beach was wonderful and it was a doable walk to Akumal Bay and the village even for our 4 year old. The only drawback to the studio was that it did not have internet in the room. We had to go to the pool area or shared patio for internet.

We spent 8 days in casita "Maria". This room was fantastic in almost every way, with a couple of minor cautions I will detail below.
The room is very comfortable, and kept very clean. The beds are firm, which we liked. Water temperature and pressure in the shower was great. Towels were plentiful, thick and clean. The TV was DirectTV, but very few channels came in (note, we did not try and fix this or report to management, so it might be a simple fix). The dining room table was two person and very tall. Our two year old could not eat with us, as they provided stools instead of chairs to match the height of this table.
The kitchen is fully outfitted. The pots, pans and knives are better than I use at home, although the four burner stove is electric. The kitchen is equipped with a fridge, cooler, waffle iron, blender, microwave and even a welcoming fruit basket. No stove, but they will set up an outdoor grill for you on request.
We did not make many demands upon the management, but from watching the manager dealing with others I was impressed by how efficient and professional they were. Snorkels and life jackets are available upon request, and bikes are available for rent.
The beach behind the condo is half-moon bay. This beach had great sand for my kid to play in, but had a very rocky water entry (wish I brought water shoes) and a band of seaweed washed up on the shore between the sand and surf. Snorkeling was pretty good, but I recommend walking down to either end of the bay to reach the coral from a more sheltered access. Still, I did find a giant stingray and some sea turtles right offshore from the condo.
The neighborhood can't be beat. A very quite street, with an expensive but convenient grocery a couple of hundred feet away. Akumal beach and Yal-Ku lagoon are a long walk away (we drove to both). Many good restaurants within waking distance.
To recap- first rate for us in almost every way.
About me: Enjoys Beach & Water Sports
The room was called a "casita" which means a small house. What it really was was a moldy basement unit without windows. No beach breeze- no cross ventilation- not even a well functioning air conditioner. I would not rent it again and would not recommend it for anyone who has any concern for mold and mildew. The staff was very friendly and helpful although when they went home at 5, should there be any emergency, etc. - you were on your own. My cell phone did not work at the location either.

Pros: Tap water was already purified (nice!), Good layout, comfy bed, clean, good location on beach, welcome basket with snacks & fruit was a great touch
Cons: Doesn't face the ocean so there's not much breeze (a/c works fine if you're ok with that), needs a small couch and an actual dining table.
Tips (for anywhere in Quintana Roo): 1. Take the collectivos for $25MX/ride. Its easier than you think. 2. Don't ever, ever leave dirty dishes out you'll get ants immediately. If you don't want to do dishes right away put them in soapy water. (This has been for every place we've stayed.) 3. Get up one morning for the sunrise. 4. Donate to a local library. 5. Rent a bike instead of a car for your stay. WAY more fun. WAY less money. 6. Spend a day at Yal Ku Kai Lagoon. 7. White? Wear sunblock. Even in the shade.

We loved our stay at Casita Maria. The staff are the best! We rented bicycles so the trip into town was just 5 minutes. It was our most relaxing vacation ever. We loved the family of iquanas, the bird life, the turtles in the bay, and the peace and quiet. We were able to snorkel 4 of the 14 days we were there but the other days were too rough, so we enjoyed relaxing and listening to the ocean. The little pool is lovely, especially since Half Moon Bay is not an easy place to swim.
The casitas have no windows except for the door. This was not a problem for us as we expected it and we were rarely indoors anyway. The kitchen is better equipped than my own, including a wonderful selection of spices. This casita was a terrific deal and we can't wait to go again.
My only suggestions would be to get comfy cushions for the lounge chairs on the beach...they were pretty uncomfortable. And Casita Maria has very poor lighting in the kitchen.

We needed a condo for a few nights and this was a great budget option. The studio was spacious enough for our family of 4, and the kitchenette was well-equipped with everything needed for basic meal prep, including a full-size fridge which was nice (vs. a mini).
The location is great and close to a great restaurant - La Lunita - as well as a fun bar - La Buena Vida (?). To get into town the taxi ride was kindof pricey at $80 pesos each way for a 5 minute ride, but it would probably have been walkable w/o a 4 year old and an infant in tow.
We LOVED the Turtle Bay Bakery & Cafe for breakfast, lunch, dinner and ice cream. Don't miss it.

The property and units (#12 and a casita) were in great condition. The staff is constantly working around the property to keep it clean and well maintained. The location of Playa Caribe is fantastic. Steps from the ocean and great casual dining. It was a great week that I wish didn't fly by so fast.

It was my daughter and two friends who stayed in Casita Annette. They were generally happy with it except for the musty smell. They had to spray every day to try to get the smell out. Other than that all the amenities were more than adequate. It was a very short walk around the building to the beach. The staff were very good including the maid. There were no issues during their one week stay. I think they would do it all over again!

It is always delightful to be back in Akumal. This was our fifth stay. The casitas in Playa Caribe are a real value when you consider the location; Half Moon bay beach is around the corner! Property management are courteous and work to resolve any issues/problems and there is parking. Enjoy!

This property has so many nice extra touches including a first rate entertainment center and a fabulous caretaker and staff, just sorry I could not spend my entire stay here.

We stayed in Casita Maria for two nights before moving to a villa with friends. The accommodations were very nice and clean, the beds comfortable, and our son really enjoyed the pool. Best part of all we were alerted to a turtle laying her eggs in the middle of the night!
By: Connie Browning
Arriving at the casita we were immediately impressed with how cozy it was. It was well lit, even without much natural light. Lots of space, well-maintained, everything you need in the kitchen. Perfect for us. I do wish there was a bigger bed, but that was alright. You can't do much better for beach. It was super chill and gorgeous. We had never done a condo before but now are converts. There are so many restaurants about an 18 minute walk away or less (we timed it). After a lovely dinner with wine and an 18 minute walk, you'll sleep like a baby. We had breakfast on the deck by the pool every day and didn't really miss not having a balcony. We will definitely be back.
By: Bret Olson
Had a wonderful experience. It's away from the busy cities but still close enough if you want to visit them. Good time scuba diving at the dive shop. Luis was our dive master and was excellent. Good restaurants in the area and the prices were good. Great place for turtle watching. Some some being hatched and also saw a turtle laying her eggs. The staff was very good and the condo has it's own water system so you drink from the tap and not worry about it later. The pool out back overlooks Half Moon Bay and is a great place to relax after a day of visiting the nearby ruins, or other day trips that are available. Definitely will come back and also use Loco Gringo

We stayed in Unit #1 with two small children. When we first walked in we couldn''t believe our eyes as to how beautiful and spacious this unit was. This unit was perfectly situated with its own patio and sand area, steps to the beach and pool but still very private. The unit itself was amazing!!! We had everything we needed and more! The beds were super comfortable and the balconies off the bedrooms were such a nice surprise. The welcome basket was a great touch. The pool area is the perfext size for small children and lizards and hermit crabs run around the deck. The beach had alot of Sargassum which was a bit of a bummer but it cleared up a bit during our stay. Apparently, the sea turtles love it so we were forgiving of its presence :). We would definitely stay here again in a heartbeat! So beautiful!!!

This place was perfect for our family of 3. Spotlessly clean, great beach access. Everyone that worked there was great. Augustine was really helpful when our airport transfer fell through. Walk to La Buena Vida and La Lunita. Would definitely go back.

Wonderful place to stay in Akumal.

Agustin welcomed us with the key to our condo, #9. It was cool and clean, and beautifully decorated. There was a welcome bowl of goodies-- chips, salsa, coffee, popcorn, cookies, etc. The unit was equipped with everything you can imagine-- even a panini press! The bed and linens were very comfortable, and the bathroom was spacious, with good water pressure. It was nice to have a safe in the closet, and plenty of drawers and hangers to hold our clothes.Although we were on the third floor directly over the pool, the noise was never a problem. The view of the sunrise was slightly obstructed by the middle balcony, but it was easy to just go downstairs and sit on the beach to get the full effect. We found everything we needed at the Midway market just across the street-- even bacon! It was an easy walk to La Buena Vida ( where we went for happy hour most evenings), or into town for great food at Turtle Bay or Lol-Ha. The location right in the middle of Half Moon Bay makes it easy to get to Yal-Ku as well. We walked to Akumal Bay each morning to snorkel before the tour groups took over ( and brought home baked goods from Turtle Bay Bakery) and saw all kinds of sea life-- many turtles, rays, squid, etc. Thankful that the crowds don''t seem to have affected it too much yet. We did snorkel one afternoon in HMB when it was calm. Saw lots of beautiful coral and shells, but not as many fish. The only problem we had was with our air conditioner, which would poop out each day. The staff was very responsive, but it appeared there was a problem that might involve opening up a wall to get to a leak. They were going to wait until we left to check it out in more depth, but they did all they could to make us comfortable. Our maid, Patricia Zapata, did a beautiful job keeping the condo spotless and was very friendly. We really enjoyed condo living in Akumal. We felt we had more contact with the locals rather than being isolated at an AI.
