xcaret releases macaws at Los Tuxtla Biosphere Reserve

Xcaret, the Riviera Maya eco park has been very active and dedicated to their program to reintroduce the scarlet macaw into its natural habitats in Mexico.

In a little over a year, the scarlet macaw population flying free in the jungles of Mexico has increased 41%.

A 2013 study showed that there were no more than 240 of these beautiful birds living free in Mexico’s jungles due to the destruction of their habitat and illegal wildlife trafficking   In June 2014, the population of healthy macaws has increased in the Palenque, Chiapas and in Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve in the state of Veracruz  thanks to the projects to reintroduce the species  launched by Xcaret Park jointly with the Biology Institute of the National Autonomous University (UNAM), Acajungla A.C., La Otra Opción and Bosque Antiguo associations and Aluxes Ecopark Palenque.

During your vacation you can visit Xcaret and the other areas parks and attractions.  Learn more about the other parks and activities.
