This grand slam has nothing to do with baseball. We will leave that up to the pros in North America. This grand slam has to do with fishing, a trifecta of three specific fish species caught by one fisherman (sorry fisher person) in one day. We just learned on our last fishing trip that there are off shore and inshore Grand Slams as well as the Super Grand Slam and the Fantasy Grand Slam!
Cool thing is, both the inshore (fly fishing) and off shore Grand Slams are achievable in the Riviera Maya! Yes sir, ma’am. BOTH are possible in the Riviera Maya. Coolio!
Okay, so these are the permitted fish that the International Fishing Association (IFA) includes in their list of Grand Slam allowed species. Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit and Snook. A Grand Slam is when three of any these four species is caught by one fisherman on the same day.
The Super Grand Slam is when all four species are caught by one fisherman on the same day. The Sian Kaan and Costa Maya are home to all of these species. With the aid of a guide you could have either a Grand Slam or Super Grand Slam during your fishing trip.
Offshore fish permitted by the IFA for all levels of ‘Slams’ are the following: Atlantic Blue Marlin, Pacific Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, White Marlin, Striped Marlin, Atlantic Sailfish, Pacific Sailfish, Swordfish, Dolphinfish, Tuna Species (Thunnus genus), Wahoo or Spearfish. Ten of these twelve species are found in the Caribbean. If you catch three of these on the same day, you win a Grand Slam. If you catch four of these ten species on the same day, a Super Grand Slam. If you catch five of these species on the same day – Fantasy Grand Slam!
If you want to try and get the BIllFish Grand Slam or Billfish Super Grand Slam the official fish in this category are only Atlantic Blue Marlin, Pacific Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, White Marlin, Striped Marlin, Atlantic Sailfish, Pacific Sailfish, Swordfish and Spearfish.
So what are you waiting for? Most of the awarded Off Shore grand Slams were recorded during the month of May but a few lucky fisherman have caught their Grand Slam in months other than May. Inshore Grand Slams are easier to come by and are possible in any month of the year.
