Food is like a universal language; a good dish can tell so much about a place. Mexican gastronomy is one of the things we are most proud of. Local gastronomy represents the warmth and friendliness of the people. Playa del Carmen not only offers local gastronomy, the diversity of visitors and travelers makes it easier for us to offer an endless list of meals from different countries. Besides the upcoming gastronomic events, there are permanent restaurants with delicious options for all kind of needs. Make sure you request a list of top restaurants in the area next time you visit the Mexican Caribbean.
The gastronomic afternoons at Plaza 28 de Julio started to be permanent recently. Only a few months ago, the local government decided to designate that Plaza for local vendors to sell their products. Mostly is food from different places; Colombia, Italia, Mexico, etc. Tacos, tamales, pastas, toasts, lemonades, cakes, and more. Vegan options are also available (tacos, tortas, and desserts). But it is not just about food, it is also a great opportunity to find artisan jewelry, organic soap/shampoo, purses, and makeup. There are in total about 30 different stands with homemade products.
The Plaza 28 de Julio is the perfect place to visit with your whole family. Kids have tons of space to run and play. There are green areas if you want to relax and lie on the grass while grabbing a bite. The Plaza is divided by concrete stairs, on one side there are all the food stands and local vendors, and the other side is usually where dog lovers play with their pets. If you are on holidays with your dog, Plaza 28 de Julio is a “must” for you. The whole area is in a family-friendly neighborhood, and right in the heart of Playa del Carmen town. Close to a lot of stores and restaurants, plus, only a couple of blocks away from the famous 5th Avenue. Parking is also available onsite.
On Saturdays, you can also see local bands playing or salsa lessons taking place, to entertain the visitors. The days to visit the Plaza 28 de Julio and find delicious food are, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The food stands and local vendors arrive around 5:00 pm and stay there until 10:30 pm more or less. Some of the food places you can find at Plaza 28 de Julio are Mole Casero and Tonatzin Vegan Desserts.
