riviera Maya insiders food tips

We love the culinary culture in the Riviera Maya! Gary and I came from Texas over 20 years ago so we had been introduced to Mexican food before we arrived. But there is something to be said about eating locally, experiencing local foods and knowing that the ingredients are authentic. The Riviera Maya is a smorgasborg of international cuisine but it is also a smorgasbourg of NATIONAL cuisines. Like any country, there are regional dishes that are unique to geographic locations within Mexico. The...

Tulum photo of the day – Buy local at Tulum fruit markets

We are great supporters of buying local. The produce and fruits we find at the local fruit markets are so sweet, so delicious and so fresh, why would we buy from large grocery stores? Tulum fruit stands are worthy of special mention as they do have tropical fruits that can not be found in Playa del Carmen, or other local village stores. Tulum is a fruit hub where fruits come in from the east (Yucatan) and the south. Step into a roadside fruit stand in Tulum and buy some of their local produce...

Riviera Maya photo of the day – our Mexican food craving!

empanadas in Tulum or Playa del carmen

It is early and we have already decided what is for dinner. When we first arrived in Akumal many moons ago, 20 years to be exact, we used to crave American food. Now we crave Mexican food and I have a soft spot for empanadas. These are delicious and need to be a treat. They are deep-fried, filled with cheese and on top, you guessed it, full cream, lettuce and salsa. Habanero is the salsa of choice for these bad boys, but you can take your pick. It is off to Dona Marie in Playa del Carmen for...

Riviera Maya vacation tip – Mexican food trucks rock!

riviera maya street food and food trucks

We have heard a lot of Mexican myths, but the food truck myth is most likely the biggest myth around. Larger hotels and resorts discourage their guests from eating local street food or on food trucks. Well let us tell you, street tacos, empanadas, cochinita pibil tortas (pulled pork sandwiches) are some of the best we have tasted. We are living proof that street food is delicious, wonderful and a truly authentic experience. Tulum has a family duo that sells cochinita pibil outside the Tulum...

horchata in the riviera maya - local gluten free drink

We talk about drinking coconuts all the time for hydration and over well-being, but this local drink rocks it! For those on a gluten-free diet, this could become your next drink of choice. Horchata is a cold rice based drink that is flavored with cinnamon and vanilla. Rice is soaked to create a milk like liquid (think rice milk) and blended with vanilla, cinnamon and  a sweeter. If you are thirsty, this is a great thirst quencher. If you are looking for a local, cheap, delicious drink, this is...

Riviera Maya vacation tip – Grocery store specials every Wednesday

riviera Maya food specials in local grocery stores

Listen up and save a few dollars, or pesos. The local grocery stores in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras and Tulum have a weekly deal day where locals can save on their grocery purchases. Wednesday is the day, and each grocery story chain offers great deals throughout the store. Produce is the main savings, with fruit and veggie deals being the best deal in the town. Depending on the season, we have seen tomatoes as low as 1 peso a kilo, bananas at 2 pesos a kilo, grapefruit, limes,...

This is our new favorite drink when we are in Playa del Carmen! Ah Cacao has a hot vanilla drink, which is hot milk mixed with natural vanilla and a touch of sweetness. Oh la la! The nights are warm, but the fresh hot vanilla drink seems to go down oh so well. We have talked about the brownies and lattes at this local coffee-house, but this seems to take the cake! This is a caffeine-free drink, with frothy milk and lots of flavor! Love it and would say at this point, addicted! If you find a...
