Puerto Morelos locals know that La Playita on the north end of the beach is the place in town to go for fresh seafood.  A colorful ceviche mixto of fish, octopus, conch and shrimp, whole fresh fish fried to a golden brown and succulent garlic shrimp...all the flavors of the Caribbean. Yum! While most of the tourists are having lunch on the square in the center of town, this is where you will find happy locals having lunch with their toes in the sand. Tacos al pastor in the Yucatan

Tacos al pastor  (shepherd's tacos) are a Yucatan favorite and could become your Riviera Maya vacation addiction.  This spit-grilled way of cooking pork was adopted by Mexicans from the Lebanese immigrants who brought lamb shawarma to the area. The pineapple core on top of the spit drips down onto the meat while it cooks creating a sweet, juicy flavor. Add fresh cilantro, onion and pineapple pieces to your taco for an authentic taste. Discover some other favorite local cuisine. Photo by...

Sundays are my favorite day of the week. I still have 24 hours before work Monday morning, it's my beach day and, best of all, it is cochinita pibil day in the Akumal Pueblo.  If you are not aware, cochinita pibil is a traditional Yucatecan dish of slow roasted pork marinated in achiote paste and sour oranges, and it is delicious! Every Sunday morning in Akumal, taco stands on the West side of the highway dish out this Mayan goodness on the side of rice and beans or wrapped in tortillas for...

Akumal vacation tip – Sunday is a food day in Akumal

cochinita pibil in akumal every sunday

Akumal makes Sunday even more than just FUNday. Every Sunday in the pueblo of Akumal local family style restaurants serve up cochinita pibil, AKA pulled pork sandwiches. Mexican pulled pork is a laborious process for the cook so Akumal has decided to make it a special day in town. Cochinita if done right, is marinated pork that is cooked in the ground. Yup, it is slow roasted in banana leaves in a submersed fire pit. Sound complicated right? This is how a true cochinita pibil is cooked. A...

The Riviera Maya is a smorgasborg of international cuisine but it is also a smorgasbourg of NATIONAL cuisines. Like any country, there are regional dishes that are unique to geographic locations within Mexico. The...
