Create the Perfect Day in Paradise on Isla Mujeres

The small Caribbean island of Isla Mujeres has plenty of opportunities to create the perfect day in paradise.

Isla Mujeres is located about eight miles off the coast of Cancun, known for its incomparable, turquoise, ocean views and breathtaking cliffs. While the north end of the island is known for its resort hotels, snorkeling, and scuba diving, we recommend a trip to Punta Sur, which means “South Point” in Spanish.

Here, you’ll find a sculpture park, the remains of a Mayan ruin, and a few other Instagram-worthy surprises along the way.

Exploring the Sculpture Park at Punta Sur

Meandering pathways take you on a journey through the Sculpture Park at Punta Sur. The park features numerous sculptures created by artists from across the globe and brought to Isla Mujeres in 2001.

All have similar size, height, and metal materials, painted mostly in bright colors and featuring abstract contemporary style.

Punta Sur’s hilltop location (the highest point on the island) is the most dramatic location to view the artwork. Impressive cliffsides surround Punta Sur on three sides, and some of Isla Mujeres’ most spectacular teal and turquoise Caribbean Sea views create an unbelievable backdrop for taking island photos.

The Temple of Ixchel

At the very tip of Punta Sur, on the southeasternmost point of the island, sits a small Maya temple dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility. The temple was partially knocked down by Hurricane Gilberto back in 1988, but the site remains a beautiful tribute to the women of ancient Maya culture who made pilgrimages to the temple to ask the goddess Ixchel for fertility.

How to get to Punta Sur on Isla Mujeres

Punta Sur is easy to reach by rental golf cart, rental scooter, or taxi. Take the main coastal road from Downtown Isla Mujeres all the way to the southern tip of the island (and maybe stop to enjoy some of the sights along the way).

Punta Sur has a small parking lot where you can leave your golf cart, car or scooter. There is an entrance fee of $30 pesos per person. You’ll be given an access bracelet once you’ve paid your entry fee.
