Be a Riviera Maya local and go to some of the coolest places

Loco Gringo Vacation Vibe

Hola Amigos!

Have you ever wondered where the people who live in Cancun or Riviera Maya go to vacation? Costa Maya is the vacation destination for those who already live in paradise and REALLY want to get away from it all. By getting away from it all we mean jumping into the natural beauty of Mexico and experiencing the incredible adventures mother nature has waiting for us. So what do we like to do when we vacation in Costa Maya? Here are a few of our favorite Costa Maya activities.

MANATEE EXCURSION – Take a trip to Xcalak, just 45 minutes from Mahahual and get Costa de Cocos to hook you up! Hop in a boat with local guides and go looking for manatees in the canal that lies between the sea and Chetumal Bay. This is a fun adventure looking for the manatees. We can not guarantee sightings but if you get out in the morning, the likelihood is much greater that you can see these sea cows in the wild. The manatee is an endangered species so take advantage of this opportunity.

MAYAN RUINS – The Mayan ruins of Chacchoben are located in close proximity to Mahahual off Hwy 307. These ruins are less traveled so you feel like you have the site yourself!

YUCATECAN COOKING CLASSES – Learn the secrets to Mayan cooking with Mayan Beach Garden cooking classes. In Placer just up the road from the center of Mahahaul village, this is a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture.

SAN FELIPE FORT – The San Felipe Fort located in Bacalar is a historical monument that was built in 1729 by the Spanish to protect the pueblo from pirates. During the Caste War, the Fort was used by the Spanish as a point of defense against Maya who fought to win back the village. The fort has since been restored and a museum added.

SCUBA DIVING – The Mesoamerican Reef, just off the Caribbean shores of Mexico, is the second largest barrier reef in the world. If you are a diver, this is the place you want to be. If you are a snorkeler, discover what lies in and around this delicate ecosystem. The Chinchorro Banks are not far from Mahahual and accessed by boat. The coral is untouched and remnants of shipwrecks and cannons remain in the sea.

PUNTA HERRERO – Access the Sian Ka’an Biosphere, an UNESCO natural park, from the south! Punta Herrero is really the end of the road but is full of activities. Fly fishing, snorkeling, kayaking and bird watching tours can be arranged by local guides. You can not get more real than this!
