Behla - Tulum Beach house, Riviera Maya, Mexico

Behla, Tulum beach house, Mexico
Behla is one of very few beach houses on Tulum's awesome white sand beach

Tulum beach is better known for its beach hotels and Mayan ruins than as a place to rent a villa, but there are a few on the sand. Like the hotels, all run on alternate energy which is perfectly adequate for lighting and low consumption essentials like laptops or iPods. If you are willing to trade your hair dryer and toaster for a week on one of the most incredible beaches you will ever experience, than Behla may be just the place for you. An escape to sun, sand and basic sea-side pleasures.

Inside Behla the first thing you will notice is the open floor plan on the beach level. The front door opens to the kitchen with the refrigerator and stove on the left and a breakfast counter to the right. Beyond the counter on the right is a wide room with the living room and a built-in L shaped couch, and at the far end of the room, a dining table. The entire beach side of the building is lined with glass doors and windows. There is a narrow sand floored terrace with sling-back chairs and hammocks, then one step down pure sand to the surf line. On the sand are a couple of chaise lounges, sling-back chairs, a little driftwood, a couple short coconut palms and that's about it.

Back inside and upstairs are the bedrooms, each with a queen bed and its own bathroom. The master bedroom suite has an exterior sitting area on the ocean terrace. The glass wraps around the building similar to the downstairs providing an excellent beach and ocean view, and the option to enjoy the fresh ocean breeze. There is a narrow, steep stairway from the master bedroom, to a sleeping loft with a queen bed. The other two bedrooms are on the opposite side of the house. One has a beach view and its own doors to the ocean terrace. The other has a partial ocean view and walk-around access to the terrace.

A stairway goes from the 2nd floor to the rooftop observation deck. There is a raised hardwood platform on the far end with a slanted backrest and a few cushions for your comfort. The view and sea breeze are wonderful. This is a nice option for watching the sunrise, sunset or stargazing in the evening.

Tropical beaches don't get any better than this with beach front restaurants, bars and a couple convenience stores nearby you can easily keep yourself provisioned and entertained while enjoying some of the best sea side tanning on the planet. If you're in the mood to be pampered, right next to Behla is Coqui Coqui hotel and day spa, offering massage, botanical baths, Mayan clay treatment, coconut scrubs and more.

Beach combing is a daily ritual for most on Tulum beach. Feel free to walk into restaurants and beach front establishments. Most of the beach clubs and bar/restaurants provide service for their own accommodations, and welcome walk-in visitors. We recommend a rental car for exploring the area and for quick trips into Tulum Pueblo for grocery shopping, stores and more bar/restaurants. Tulum Pueblo is a great way to spice up your evening.

Farther south, down the beach road is the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve a sparsely inhabited area of wild dunes, beaches and brackish mangroves teeming with fish and migratory birds. At the south end of the Tulum beach road is Punta Allen and Bahia de la Ascension, a gigantic bay fringed by excellent saltwater fly fishing grounds.
