Some of the more adventurous travelers who come to the Riviera Maya make the trip to Punta Allen, all the way at the end of the coastal barrier strip at the northeast extreme of the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve. Elefante Volador is on that road, between Tulum beach and Punta Allen, and what this home lacks in convenience to shopping, it more than makes up for in spectacular beach front isolation. If you really want to get away from it all, this is the place to do it.
Inside the house opens immediately to an open air living room. This is a causal lounge of sorts with pillows, a king size daybed on a built in pedestal, a couple more built in single sized lounging beds, and a handmade table for outdoor dining. A couple hammocks are strung between wooden beams with more out on the sand among the palms.
Next is the kitchen which is between the outdoor lounge and indoor living room. The kitchen has two bar fridges, a sink, 4 burner stove-top, and a pass through to the living room and dining area. Also on beach level are two of the three bedrooms. Each has a double bed, tall louvered and screened windows, and storage for your personal effects.
Upstairs is the master bedroom with a double bed, closet storage area and interior overlook to the living room below. This bedroom has a private bathroom with shower and a door to the rooftop solarium, very convenient. The solarium deck has hammocks, great sea view, breeze, and a built-in shallow soaking tub. An exterior stairway goes down to the beach side of the lower level.
Things you need like meals can be arranged through the house staff. It is assumed guests will dine out somewhat during their stay. Some grocery shopping can be facilitated through the staff. The caretaker has a phone that can normally reach Tulum for calling in supplies and services. Whenever a run is made into town, at least one caretaker stays on site to look after the house and the guests. Cecilia is liaison for additional services at the house and can make visits. She has access to a certified masseuse, an excellent chef or a tour guide given sufficient notice. more on options
Farther south is Punta Allen an interesting town at land's end with a massive lagoon on one side and the Caribbean on the other. This is a good town for cold cervezas overlooking the sea, home grown seafood Mexican style, and the possibility of getting out on the water via kayak or boat. The "panga" is the typical fishing boat here. Some offer tours for bird watching, snorkeling and fishing.
