Akumal's library and learning center offers language immersion program...

WHAT IS "HEKAB BIBLIOTECA DE AKUMAL"?
Simply stated, it is the library and learning center for Akumal. It's mission, as stated by librarian and author Emilia May, is to "Help readers achieve their goals according to their own fundamental interests".

Hekeb Be Biblioteca de Akumal offers an immersion course in the Maya language. The instructor, Luis Dzib, is a seasoned language teacher, fluent in English, German, Italian, Spanish and Maya. He brings to the classroom two years of training in pedagogy, ten years of study in the ancient Maya culture and a lifetime of experience as a multilingual Maya. He is also author of the text, "Art of the Maya Language".

The immersion course last for two weeks and involves two hours of classroom in the morning, and afternoon walks in the Akumal area of Quintana Roo. You will learn to converse with Maya families, vendors, guides and restaurant and hotel personnel. Demonstrations and tutorials in the preparation of traditional Maya meals and herbs are also included.

Your participation in this course helps support programs to keep the Maya language alive through conversation groups, news groups and incentives for parents to continue speaking Maya to their children.

Course Fee is $300 per person and includes text, workbook and 35 hours of instruction.

Zaci cenote in Valladolid, Yucatan
To the ancient Maya, cenotes were much more than just a fresh water source. Many cenotes were believed to be portals to an underground world where mighty Gods and dead ancestors existed in a spirit world. The living feared the Gods, paying homage to them in elaborate ceremonies that sometimes included human sacrifice. In this way the rulers of the great cities hoped to appease the Gods and receive sufficient rain for crops.

In this day and age cenotes still serve as portals to an underground world; one of submerged caves that act as underground rivers for the fresh water. The largest and most beautiful submerged caves in the world are located here. They are a mecca for cave divers who come from around the globe. This type of diving is hazardous and requires special training for scuba divers.

If you are planning a vacation to the area and would like to visit some cenotes, there are many to see in the area between Puerto Aventuras and Tulum and west from Tulum along the road to the Coba ruins. To see cenote Zaci and cenote X'Keken in Valladolid, drive west from Tulum on the Coba road. At the fork in the road where the road splits off to the Coba ruins and Nuevo Xcan, take the other road located on the back side of the intersection. Then follow the signs to Valladolid.

CENOTES, what are they?...
Physically, cenotes are natural ponds or wells filled with fresh water. They can be found scattered throughout Quintana Roo and the state of Yucatan, where they serve as refreshing swimming holes and snorkeling areas.
